+1 - I can do more with a J.D. than I can with a Ph.D. That's far and away the biggest reason.

Also, on an intellectual level the relationship between law and society fascinates me (Are they mutually constitutive? Does the social form the legal? The legal the social? How?) I've looked at the topic from the perspective of a historian but I feel like a J.D. would provide a interesting foundation for further inquiry.

Plus I want to force everybody to call me "Dr. Dr. Professor Somebody M.A. Ph.D. Esq. Attorney and Counselor at Law."

Because I'm a lawyer, and they won't let me take the bar without it.

Can anyone answer this?
2002-2006.....at my LS People in the bottom 10% got vault50 firm jobs...makes me sick
Yeah, HYS.

Sort of a quandry, huh? But remember, I qualified my response by noting that I am not just out of school. Things would be better in applying for law school if the recent grads weren't clogging up the system. And for people with WE, this is the right time. Ideally, we should be able to go to law school, while, theoretically the recent grads work and gain their experience. Year-by-year, we would graduate into the working world while they trickle into the MBA, JD and M.D. and RN programs, as needed or desired. Grad schools want mature students with real world experience, life experience.

But what we have now is everybody trying to go to law school to hide from the economy. Things would be better for everyone if graduates would take their butts to work. They can't demand as much money, so they have better opportunities to get hired in a bad economy. Companies seek ways to cut cost, and cheaper labor is one of them.

People, this is a good time to go to law school, IF you are the right candidate.

Wanted to be a lawyer since age 14. Subsequent research and interviews with attorneys only confirmed my desire.

I've always wanted to go. I really want academia, but even if I can jump all the usual hurdles (which are many) my geographic limitations may prevent it. If that's the case, I have backup options I can live with.

1. To screw with other lawyers. (Seriously, some of these people are really condescending, treating non-lawyer people like peasants). The next time one of them gets pull over and gets a summon and say something like: "I shouldn't get this and I know more about the law than you do because I am a lawyer", I'll say: "Good for you. I am a lawyer too, I'll see u in court".
2. Want to obtain a direct commission to USA JAG.

Combination of having nothing else to do and the prospect of adding HYS to my resume. Ultimately, I'm okay with the decision, although I wish I had taken some time between ugrad and law school to see what else is out there. I don't particularly like being a student, and I look forward to getting a job and becoming a working stiff :D

The third option. Despite what some might say, I'm pretty sure it's the incorrect answer. Sigh. I think Obama is onto something when he says he wants schools to skew children toward the sciences. Being a writer is a pretty thankless skill when any asshole with a computer can proclaim him or herself as an internet journalist. Bah! It's not only that I haven't gotten much to do in terms of career prospects (although I'm OK for now, it's moreso the future I worry about), but spending three years in school again actually appeals to me a great deal.

Anyone going to law school to get rich (or for animated gifs of black people with money) is probably in for a big surprise.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
