Any success with Berkeley matching scholarship program?

Post by Kronk » Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:51 pm

Just curious if anyone has had success sending in an offer. Essentially I am deciding whether or not I'll be writing the extra essay Penn requires for scholarships, considering that I know I won't attend.

From what I've heard, it's rather difficult to get a matching offer at Boalt.

I, too, am looking for anecdotes. A TLS-er got one last year, but it seems like they really just give it to a few students each cycle.

Yeah. I saw a thread of someone getting rejected with a 177 / 3.8. Another of someone getting matching aid with a 169 / 3.8. So it seems to be pretty holistic.

Well, it's possible that a 169/3.8 only needs a little money to be lured away from Duke or Michigan, but nothing short of a full ride will sway the 177/3.8 who got into HYS, and even then their success rate would be low. So it could be the case that Berkeley is simply offering matching scholarships strategically rather than holistically.
