Major mess-up?

Post by Inygma » Fri Jan 15, 2010 5:11 pm

Hey all, I submitted this in part of my "Why <insert school here>" statement I recently submitted.

"No one in my generation has had an opportunity like this, and to pass up a chance to be a part, and more importantly, help shape this new school, would be an extreme honor."

I don't know how I missed this, but am I saying "to pass up a chance would be an extreme honor" or "help shape a new school is an extreme honor"?

Yea, that seems pretty bad. It sounds like you're saying it would be an honor to pass up the chance to go there.

Ya, should I correct this, or leave it alone?

Edit the sentence and send them a corrected PS. Don't make a big deal about it. Just ask them to update your file due to a typo.

How competitive are you there to begin with, numbers-wise? If it's a reach then I would say leave it because drawing attention to something like that and correcting it isn't likely to help your chances. A typo on an application to a reach is likely to get you nixed regardless if you fix it or not so your best bet would be to hope they don't notice it.. If you're at last year's medians, I would be more inclined to change it.

lol this is what happens when you write a sentence with 2000 commas. I'd correct it and send in an edited copy with and note a caught typo.

I meant "No one in my generation has had an opportunity like this, and to have a chance to be a part, and more importantly, help shape this new school, would be an extreme honor."

I guess I'll call them and see if I can email the corrected version.

I may be an idiot... and probably not deserve to go to law school but shouldn't there be an 'of' in there somewhere?

no one in my generation has had an oppurtunity like this, and to have a chance to be a part of, and more importantly, help shape this new school, would be an extreme honor"?

Attending UC Irvine as a member of the Class of 2013 would be an unparalleled honor. Having the chance to shape a top school as it establishes a tradition of excellence in legal education is extremely exciting and an opportunity I cannot pass up. Generation.

Unfortunately I had a few typos in my personal statement as well. Most people said not to worry about it, but I ended up calling the admissions offices of every school that received the personal statement and asked if I should send in a revised copy. Most of them said it is no big deal and I should just email them the revised document. Some of them even said they would REPLACE the old personal statement with the new one, which is not common practice (most schools will just add it to your file and when your file is under review they will receive both personal statements, although I doubt they actually take the time to read the old one... they may take a quick glance to see if you put the wrong school in there though haha).

Don't lose sleep over this, from everything I have heard you are fine.

^---- +1 to that and I had a blatant typo, had an extra word in the middle of one of my sentences and I beat myself up for not having realized it but in at Fordham and BU with the typo... so... yea. And I didn't have auto-admit numbers nor did I update or send a change.
