Re: Schools that Pay for you to visit during ASW
A perhaps-ignorant/idiotic question: and maybe no one knows yet, but how are these stipends disbursed? (either in general, or if you know about a specific school-- someone already talked about UVA.) As in, do schools book the ticket for you, or need a receipt for your travel expenses, or just hand you a check if you show up, or something else?
(I ask because I'm abroad and it'd cost about $2k to get back to the US, not counting flying between schools... but if I could pool some of the stipends together, it would suck slightly less.)

Also to note: UVA doesn't require receipts; your reimbursement amount is distributed based on your geographic proximity, and is only contingent on you actually attending.
Stanford and Chicago require full receipts.

Here's the wording from my acceptance letter from Minnesota: "Any admitted non-resident attending one of these weekends is eligible to receive up to $300 for related travel costs." They require receipts, but I don't see anything about reimbursement being contingent upon enrollment.

I spoke with the admissions offices at Iowa and San Diego this week. Neither school offers any sort of reimbursement or stipend to out of state people.

Columbia provides up to $200 for travel, but it's need-based and must be pre-approved (i.e. I'll be paying my own way).

Do you know how you go about getting approved? Frontier has a $179 RT ticket Denver-NYC, so that'd be amazing.maggiebre wrote:Columbia provides up to $200 for travel, but it's need-based and must be pre-approved (i.e. I'll be paying my own way).

For anyone interested in Duke, I called and they said they haven't made a decision yet but they should let people know soon. I don't think they're going to be giving out the $250 that they did last year

Re: Schools that Pay for you to visit during ASW
I was wondering if any of the people that received an acceptance so far from WUSTL received information about a travel stipend. I just spoke with a lady in admissions and she said they only award that money to certain students and that it would be stated in the admissions email if I was chosen. Looks like I won't be visiting if that is the case...

There's a note about a $200 reimbursement in an e-mail about the Admitted Students Bulletin Board if they offered you the stipend.ccourt14 wrote:I was wondering if any of the people that received an acceptance so far from WUSTL received information about a travel stipend. iirc (from last year as well), up to $500.FromRussiaWithLove wrote:Cardozo will pay you. The amount varies depending on how far away you are. I believe to get the full reimbursement you have to be outside of 300 miles away. For half reimbursement, 150..
I am not certain on the numbers because I did this a year ago, but they definitely help out. All you do is fill out a form. You can request it by emailing the admissions office.

How can you find out whether or not a school pays you to visit (other than consulting this thread)? I'm interested in going to the ASW for New York University - how do you know they don't help reimburse costs? I didn't see anything about that on their website.

I've simply been going by past year policies and then changing them if the current reimbursement rates are different for this cycle. While Columbia seems to offer a travel subsidy for "financially-needy" students, I couldn't find anything similar from NYU.Canadian wrote:How can you find out whether or not a school pays you to visit (other than consulting this thread)? For our purposes, unless a school explicitly says it provides reimbursement, I've been erring on the side of saying they don't.
