I counted cars as I walked through the SMU garage this morning. I hit $300K rather quickly on a short walk.

CU-Boulder should be mentioned, though that may be more of an undergrad thing than a grad thing. I do know a bunch of rich law students, but they have the tact to hide it. The undergrads are far too insecure for such things. Over half the students are out of state, and many are from very rich families in California. It is weird. I do arraignments for the DAs office and most of the minor in possessions/public intox are from the out of state crowd. Entitled kids who came out here to snowboard and escape their work obsessed fathers. Makes me want to do criminal defense and just milk "trustafarians." Surely that would be a hard field to elbow into, but wow the defense people I see at the courthouse are charging 2k per possession of drug paraphernalia, and I see the same people everyday.

Define rich. I always see that CU attracts a lot of kids from 10-25m net worth families. But those who have money from heavy manufacturing 250m+ net worth families are more likely to attend Montana or Wyoming to avoid the crowds so to speak and that's where a lot of the land trusts, ranches, and vacation chalets are now located. WY/MT are in vogue right now. Not to mention most of the trustfuds don't want to leave Denver with access to cherry creek mall and their family jet so they will go to DU. CU is like a tourist area with pseudo wealth. The real money isn't there. It's sort of like when tourists go to Vail and go OMG everyone here is rich when the real money and wealth is in Aspen.Lord Randolph McDuff wrote:CU-Boulder should be mentioned, though that may be more of an undergrad thing than a grad thing. Quite possibly the best post I've ever read on TLS.typ3 wrote:Define rich. I always see that CU attracts a lot of kids from 10-25m net worth families. wuttyp3 wrote:Are we talking median wealth or average? Are we talking rich as in assets or liquid capital. I'm sure there are schools that are rural off the map where there are kids attending that would raise the entire school net worth quite a bit since land values have increased so much but this isn't liquid capital.hoogs23 wrote:Which law schools have the richest students or parents attending them?
You can find HNWI&F at every school so it is sort of a stupid question. You have to remember that in the HNW world which I consider to start at around 25m+ (although that is relatively pretty pauper) people are a lot more mobile and education means a lot less. It's your contacts and access to capital that matter. My rural state school boasts a lot of families in the 30m-90m range for directly attainable assets and a few between 100m-600m and that's a rural state with under 1m in population that attend public state schools and a few go to private easternly schools.
Although where their kids go to school is irrelevant since at this point in my state the majority of businesses and land are already in 3rd or 4th generation, the majority of aggregate/ballast/mineral railroad construction is 5th now entering 6th generation of ownership. Meat packing is currently at the 3rd/4th generation although that's a little far fetched since a lot of the original money from the railroad meatpacking backrolled the industry in 1960 when the shift occurred to move meatpacking away from the major metro areas and to the rural areas for livestock and poultry.
The families own the businesses and the people who actually ask questions like the OP are the ones that work them as employees and make sure that these families stay wealthy. A lot of the crap that Forbes etc doesn't do well or keep track of is old money and families. When one person doesn't have all of their worth in a newly formed public company it's hard to estimate their NW.
It's a lot harder to nail down the net worth of old money especially when people don't remember families that took big pay days 20,30,50,100 years ago from insurance, banking, railroads, interstate construction, telecom, security etc. and it's sitting in trusts, ranches, or in offshore accounts.
TLDR: Stupid OP question unless it is narrowed down to what we're talking about for defining wealth.

Ronald Dworkin teaches at NYU? Okay, it just jumped to my number one spot. I'm kind of surprised Arthur Miller isn't on the list.sinfiery wrote:Egregious anti-NYU trolling ITT, they are arguably the best school in the nation.

My intent is to tell the truth as I know it. What may be reality for me will probably sound like madness to a lot of others on this forum.
I worked for a few summers for a private family company that does industrial fire, security, environment monitoring, and system integration for heavy manufacturing S&P500 / D30- (RR, meat packing (coincidentally pink slime), airlines, mining (ballast and aggregates) pipelines, fertilizer, ethanol, health care networks etc. A lot of families and companies after doing a plant, facility, etc. would have us integrate their homes and home offices with the monitoring software and install security in their vacation homes. Long story short, I've spent a lot of air time flying to Aspen and Jackson and middle of no where in Montana on corporate and private jets to wire random crap so execs could check in on them on their phones. I am willing to answer questions if people want. The most random thing was having to integrate and install cameras on a gazebo on a corporate ranch in central Montana so someone could check in from their office. O.o

Can't help but add fuel to this ridiculous fire. Did it ever occur to you that kids who have access to private jets might not need to/want to go to school where their parents' vacation houses are?typ3 wrote:But those who have money from heavy manufacturing 250m+ net worth families are more likely to attend Montana or Wyoming to avoid the crowds so to speak and that's where a lot of the land trusts, ranches, and vacation chalets are now located.

I'm gonna second this. The people I know who are ridiculously rich don't want to live in the middle of nowhere, and would much rather be in NY, LA, London, Hong Kong, Paris, etc.bdubs wrote:Can't help but add fuel to this ridiculous fire. So the people who go to SMU, Miami, Boulder, and Harvard are going to go take surveys of their classmates to find out how rich daddy is now right?
