I plan on getting a Lenovo X220 tablet laptop that lets you write notes on the screen.

I know a lot of doctors who use these, they love them. I myself haven't used one though, so not sure what the tablet screen feels like. I am interested though...

Should I just buy more memory for it (that would help it, right?), or get a new mac book, and use this one as a back-up?
Before you spend money, try Chrome as your browser. Something happened to me about six months ago where all of a sudden my MBP (4 yrs old) was dragging ass and it did it whether I used Safari or FF, even after clearing cache/cookies and all that other standard tech support BS. Started using Chrome instead and all my performance issued disappeared. (Strangely, I had this exact same experience at work on my winbox)

Also probably wouldn't hurt to use mackeeper or some other cleaner utility... but try Chrome first and you may solve all your issues.

That said, memory is important. I buy for my company as well as myself. I generally buy 1 or two processor speeds below bleeding edge to save money there, but max out on memory (for macs I do that through the authorized retailer since they can do it cheaper than ordering the mac with the memory... they can usually do an HDD upgrade too for cheap if you do it before you take delivery).

That sounds like you've got a MacBook Pro 1,x or 2,x. You're probably in need of a replacement though I would see if overall performance hasn't improved after Chrome. Also, if it's a 1,x, you're maxed out for RAM.

You can find out all sorts of information about your Mac, including the identifier number (1,x... 2,x... etc.) the same place I assume you found your RAM info (about this mac >> more info). The various models are laid out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pr ... ifications

thanks! my mac isn't a pro though, just a regular old macbook 2,1  i did find the wikipedia link for the macbook, and it says mines upgradable to 3gb (it's currently got 2 512's). i'm a little worried, because the wiki page said mine was recalled in 2010 for heat-related hard drive issues... i never got the recall notice

i've currently got chrome, excel, and itunes open. activity monitor is telling me i've only got about 13mb of system memory free, but i've not been able to open those programs together in years.

If you're going to get a pro for next year, wait until the refresh or the last possible day before classes, whichever comes first. The new pros are going to be worth waiting for.
When will the new pro's be out? I wanted to buy one at the beginning of summer so I could get comfortable with it before classes start as I've never owned an apple laptop. Wouldnt mind waiting for the new ones, but dont want to wait all summer just to get the same model I could have purchased as the beginning of summer.

Also, will this one do for law school:

13-inch: 2.4 GHz
2.4GHz dual-core
Intel Core i5
4GB 1333MHz
500GB 5400-rpm1
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Built-in battery (7 hours)2

Thanks!

Just bought a 15-inch (2.4GHz quad-core, 4GB 1333MHz model) macbook pro. Fuck yes. It's so much better than my old (2009) macbook.

That should suffice.

the lenovo x220 weighs 3 pds and you can add a battery called the slice that gives you a combined battery power of almost 20 hours.

You should consider going on craigslist and getting a used PC. It's not as if you need it for anything more than office use, internet, or email, right?

You can get a decent one for a couple hundred bucks or so. It's worked for me so far....

After lugging around a Macbook for the past few years, I'm getting an Air. You could get a refurbished one through Apple and it knocks a couple hundred bucks off.
