i actually just picked up the newest model of that bag - and if you run out of space using that baby, you're carrying too much stuff.FantasticMrFox wrote:Mmhm I like that onedaesonesb wrote:This is what you need.

I've had... some Timbuk2 messenger bag for literally ten years now. The thing is basically indestructible, and you can pack a ridiculous amount of shit in it.Emma. wrote:Is this a flame, DF? There's literally 3 "What bag should I get?" threads on the homepage right now.
If not, I like my new Timbuk2 Command
Everyone I've talked to (particularly the hardcore bicyclist types), have nothing but praise for the Chrome bags though.
Neither of those are professional though, obviously. You're going to need to start looking at stuff like:

That and some tan suits.

Too hipster?

I like Crumpler stuff, but I'm worried this one might be a little small too, though I'm more than willing to use school lockers, so I guess that's not a big deal.

I'm pretty happy with my Case Logic pack-pack. I think I bought it at Boston Store.

General question-- about how many cubic inches should your backpack be at a minimum? Is 1400 or 1500 cubic inches too small?

Damn, I hope that's plenty. The bag I'm considering (above) is 763. Although, it may depend on whether it's a backpack or messenger. I feel like a backpack would typically have more cubic space, but maybe that's just an assumption I have no justification for...quixotical wrote:General question-- about how many cubic inches should your backpack be at a minimum? Re: Man Backpack for Law School?
I was looking at a women's Dakine bookbag and someone mentioned that ~1400 cubic inches is on the small side. The only women's backpacks I've been able to find significantly bigger are Northface, and I'm not crazy about their color schemes. I'm just trying to figure out about how big it really needs to be... and yes, I'm a woman insinuating bigger is bettertmon wrote:Damn, I hope that's plenty. The bag I'm considering (above) is 763. I'm afraid I'm a stereotypical girl in that I have no conception of how big or small 1500 cubic inches isFantasticMrFox wrote:Some people (like me) carry around everything and my backpack always has to be spaciousquixotical wrote:General question-- about how many cubic inches should your backpack be at a minimum? Re: Man Backpack for Law School?
Sorry if this was already addressed, but how many books do you generally keep in your bag? For someone who's fine going to and from a locker (assuming it's a reasonably convenient) do you think the one I listed above could work? The dimensions are:FantasticMrFox wrote:Some people (like me) carry around everything and my backpack always has to be spaciousquixotical wrote:General question-- about how many cubic inches should your backpack be at a minimum? Width: 39 cm / 15.35 inches
Height: 27.5 cm / 10.8 inches
Depth: 21 cm / 8.26 inches
Volume: 12.5 L / 763 cubic inches
Interestingly, the description on the product page says it has a 14 liter main compartment, and it looks like there's a secondary compartment as well...

Re: Man Backpack for Law School?
I am going to say that 1500 is enough
According to JanSport, 1300-1750 should fit 2-3 textbooks, paperback books, a large binder, 2-3 spiral notebooks and some other items. With a laptop, you should be able to fit just about the same unless the books are abnormally thick. I couldn't find the exact backpack that I use now to figure out the capacity...
(I can fit in just about everything I need so I assume it's around 2000, if not more)
A 13 inch MBP and the three LSAT bibles (1250 pages total, approx) together makes up around 470 cubic inches; however, many laptop backpacks have its separate laptop pouch (often with a cushion, making the books jut out) so to fit all four items, it'd actually be over 470 cubic inches
(Just had to kill a HUGE roach--that is one thing I detest and am scared of--it started flying as soon as it crawled into my room under the door
)

Unfortunately I feel like TNF quality has really declined over the past decade or so. Their stuff used to be bombproof but these days most of their mass-market stuff is pretty chintzy. Also, I've been pretty wary of it since the time I was in Cambodia and they were hawking legit TNF bags out of stores for pennies on the dollar: a guy told us they run the plants over quota and sell off the excess.Naked Dude wrote:When I was about to start undergrad, my father gave me his old North Face Borealis to replace my crappy Jansport. It was 2-3 years old when I got it, and he had used it for travel and when he went hiking. I used it all 4 years throughout undergrad. Kept my stuff dry through rain, sleet and snow. For four years. Stuffed and overstuffed it, carried my laptop in it, never had a single tear or busted zipper. One hell of a bag. I wouldn't even consider getting a non-North Face replacement for it. The bag I have will set you back around $80 (though if you're an intelligent deal shopper you can find it for 10 or even 20 bucks less than the NF website price). Worth every penny. It's not really "expensive" if it takes years of abuse. I'm considering buying a new Borealis for law school this fall, but my old one is still perfectly fine. I abuse the hell out of it too. I think I'll hold onto it.
If I replace it I'll probably get a larger, quasi-hiking pack to accommodate casebooks and stuff like the Box Shot. When I'm traveling (plane, car, bus), it doubles as a weekend bag, so I could use the extra space to fit books and clothes should it be necessary.
FWIW I'm planning on using the same compartmented tote-style bag I've had for the last couple years. Lots of space, laptop sleeve down the middle and pockets on the outside for water bottle and travel mug.

Here's a good deal on an all-leather, Kenneth Cole messenger bag: Kenneth Cole Boxer Leather Flap Messenger
Was $160, now $149.98. 50% off when you add to cart. $4.00 shipping. EDIT: Use code WELCOME10 to save another $7 or so. $71.49 shipped for me.
Not a bad deal at all for something that would look significantly more professional for interviews and when you're working. I plan on using one of these for church, interviews, business trips, and sporting a Swissgear Wengar LEGACY pack for school.
EDIT2: Response from Kenneth Cole about more bag details:

What do you think of Jansport Backpacks (LinkRemoved)? I am looking to get one. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm not sure where to find them anymore, but if you can find a bag by clive, i would get one of those, they come with a lifetime warranty, but you wont need it because they last forever. i have had mine for about 9-10 years and i'm still taking it with me to school. i find it at a skateboard shop near where i live, so make checkout skateboard shops for them.

Jansport backpacks are excellent for carrying your social studies texbook home from 5th grade. (I'd be surprised if one lasted a whole year carring large books and a laptop.)davidjohnson wrote:Nice bag. The newest model of this bag has come to market. I for some reason used to only get Jansport in high school and had to get a new one every year...maybe I was just bad at "taking care" of my backpacks but one or two things always broke or ripped.
Why not try another brand? I use my school backpacks for hiking/trips as well hence why I like packs with numerous pouches, etc so I am partial to Northface but I guess it all depends on your preferences but seeing you were thinking of Jansport, I think NF would be a good place to start your search.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
