In the end, no one really has to defend their choice to attend law school against anyone else's accusations. They only need to defend it against themselves after they sign up for 100K in loans and their conscience (if they're doing it solely for the money/prestige)

Sure, it's better than 1850's England but not what it was as recently as the 1990s. Thanks to our impostor in chief's economic policies. You go ahead and become a well off lawyer and make a solid six figure and you'll see more than half of it drained by taxes. Which are only going up.

Thanks for letting us know that you're a troll/flame/idiot so we don't have to even think about taking your statements seriously.grouchynihilist wrote:Sure, it's better than 1850's England but not what it was as recently as the 1990s. How is that statement incorrect? Because of our Dear Leader taxes are going to skyrocket even further for top earners. That's a fact. Why bother working hard to become a biglaw partner when taxes are going to drain more than half of what you earn? Not to mention estate tax so that when you die, your kids won't see much of it.

Sounds awesome. Half of a six figure salary is still way more than I'm likely to make at anything else.grouchynihilist wrote:You go ahead and become a well off lawyer and make a solid six figure and you'll see more than half of it drained by taxes.

By which you mean that the unsustainable Bush tax cuts, which have already bankrupted the United States, are not going to be renewed for a second (third?) time?grouchynihilist wrote:How is that statement incorrect? America is currently fighting two wars, one of which (Afghanistan) is now officially the longest in the history of the country. Hey, let me guess what you think FDR should have done after Pearl Harbour! Let me see, let me see... cut taxes? No no, wait... even better, cut taxes only for the top 1% of earners? Did I get it right? Yessssss!!!
P.S: get a life.

OP per the above post, I think you should add "the possibility of having my ass-kissed" and "indiscriminate amounts of coffee" to the poll list.
If / when you do, I choose the former. And helping people. Because they're pretty similar.
Yes...you get the prize for telling us all something we already knew. And for the idiots who took my remarks literally, you get to wallow in eternal iodiocy...because you still don't know when someone is joking.
What fools! People on TLS are just unbelievably dumb. But it gives me a good laugh at how easily you can be manipulated.

I don't judge anyone for chasing the money. However, as things stand I would think those interested in their best bet at big bucks should be avoiding law school.skoobily doobily wrote:I'm going to law school to make as much money as possible. Get off your high horse.
MBA, med school, anything but law school for the actual probability of big bucks.
Finance people run the very large corporation I work for, not lawyers. Most of them did not go beyond undergraduate studies.

Re: I am going to law school because...
not that im disagreeing w/ your overall point, but i wouldnt go to a school for a MBA just cuz i want the big bucks...ITE, finance degrees were hit hard as well, and a MBA is more something you get when you're already on the track to x job and just need that extra degree; it doesnt necessarily GET you a job if you're fresh out of undergrad -> MBA...i mean to say that you already have to be making something of yourselfrdcws000 wrote:I don't judge anyone for chasing the money. and while med school is 'safer' than law school overall for making the big bucks, it is a LOT more work and even more selective; to clarify, i mean both med school AND the profession are a lot more work for the most part (of course varies over time w/ what you decide to do, but lets say first 10 yrs lol)
so these 2 paths arent necessarily better ones to take over a decent law school, unless of course you're talking about TTT's w/ the assumption you'll be raking in the dough...in that case, any random med school would most likely mean more bucks than any random law school haha

You think JD's are worthless for making big bucks? If we're talking bottles and bitches here - you're def. not going to get it with med school or with a MBA from anything other than a top MBA School(Harvard, NW, etc.)rdcws000 wrote:I don't judge anyone for chasing the money. I've seen lawyers become in-house counsel and move on to chief positions in the company. For instance, look at Gawker(Gizmodo, Lifehacker, etc.) - their CTO is a lawyer.
Bottles and Bitches aren't guaranteed to anybody regardless of profession. MD's are guaranteed to make a certain amount.. but they have a pretty hard ceiling in which they have to do something incredibly risky(invest ITE) or innovate.

We're getting slightly anecdotal here, but just for conversations sake, I think very few corporations hire lawyers out of law school for in-house counsel. Most recruit lawyers with 2-3 years in a firm, and as we all know, getting into "the firm" is the hard part. And no, I never used the word worthless! Kepe in mind I am going to law school and I am not knocking the J.D. I think about the money, but if money was all that mattered I'd be in B-school, (unless I was smart enough to go to med school).
I'm talking strictly in probabilities here. I think it is fair to say than an MBA, or an MD offer a graduate more opportunities for big bucks (for the sake of this argument, six figures eventually) than a J.D. does, in this economy or out.

I want to be compensated for my hard work and I think this is a profession that does this pretty fairly (monetarily or not).
The idea of working 80 hours a week makes me very excited. In a somewhat non-sexual way.

I'm sexually aroused whenever I work 80 hours/week. That's probably because I then have enough money for booze and hookers to cry myself to sleep... the very short amount of sleep I'd get.
I reiterate, I want to be a lawyer to bankrupt people and make them consider suicide as a plausible solution to their problems. Look at the Craigslist killers - that prosecutor was CRAZY good.

The only thing I should mention in Gawker's case: It's just happenstance that the CTO has a JD. He wasn't hired as counsel, but IIRC got his JD as "a backup plan" or something along those lines. It's served them well with the Apple scandal though... but that's just an FYI.
I've considered business school - but if you think that big law firm mentality is horrible... don't get me started on all the corporate BS you'll run into as a entry to mid level manager. I also want the ability to develop a "Book of Business".

Such is my life currently. Droning on in work so far removed from the actual product in the corp. environment is probably very similar to big law firm life. So that's why I'm going to law school, to drone on in work so far removed from the actual product, but on a different floor, and for more money.don't get me started on all the corporate BS you'll run into as a entry to mid level manager

Yep. I don't doing the work - but having the option to go to school for 3 years and effectively double-triple my salary isn't a bad deal. Still going to work 80 hours/week either way.rdcws000 wrote:Such is my life currently.
