I think when hiring people, employers hire individuals almost entirely in an effort to better the company rather than a way to enhance their social life.
That's not the point. My point of having an educated populace is to better society as a whole, not to benefit any particular company that happens to hire one of those people.

I'd be willing to sacrifice a some work output for a more educated populace. Plus, you are ignoring that businesses can and most of the time do train their own employees. Jobs are so diverse that it seems unlikely that college, even if it focused entirely on applicable skills, could do away with on the job training entirely.

Yea but what sucks is the loans (unless you get big scholarship money). Because when I graduate law school with $150,000 in debt, that sucks to pay back. I have to work for some company that is going to divert my attention and focus from doing something I think is worthwhile to doing something in their financial best interests.

Can't I go to law school for intellectual enriching and still help the world??

Or skip law school and possibly even college altogether and become a city manager in a corrupt CA town. You could make up to $787K/yr if you aim high, or "settle" for over $100K in a more pedestrian aforementioned public position.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sca ... 8559&tsp=1

from the article: "Rizzo [a CA city manager] is entitled to a state pension of $650,000 a year for life."

Good times.

I think the short answer is that CA gov definitely does not work, the electorate is just too disengaged or plain stupid to do anything. At least so far it seems. This ultimately is a problem with the people, voting in empty suits like Newsom and Villar(aigosa), and others, to run the biggest cities. Not to mention their state reps...Simply blaming Sacramento politics for everything is passing the buck.

Yet they have so much fucking power. Damn the referendum/initiative/recall, fuck it all to hell.

In general, as I have said in another thread or this one, I think the initiative system has screwed our budget because average people just do not take the big picture into consideration (i.e. let's build a bullet train but also lower taxes lolololol).

How this man managed to get elected is beyond me. He seriously lacks any and all common sense and makes decisions based on emotion. Then again, I'm judging him as an outsider - I don't live in CA

Exhibit A showing the degree to which CA public policy is out of touch with reality, and for how stupid CA voters really are. It's not like the CA economy was still booming when that got passed either...

Most voters are this stupid, luckily for other places, they don't have as much power as those in CA do.

What I've never understood is that almost every sing Californian that I've talked to or see on TV absolutely hates current policies, yet the same people keep getting elected and nothing ever changes.

I think it's going to take a little more than steps three and four to solve CA's deficit. I seriously think that CA politicians are advised by econ majors that are maybe in their second year of undergrad. It's not rocket science - you cut back. You don't spend more. The main problem is that once you start giving people things, it's really hard to take it away. People want their stuff.

I say we wait till CA breaks off and becomes an island. At that point we'll scrap everything and start over, hoping to be a better vacation destination than Hawaii.

Knowing CA, they will probably determine that step three is a right and should therefor be afforded to every resident for free.

Whether or not this comes before or after CA asks for a bailout from the federal government is another question. :)
