Yeah. No offense, "reasonabledoubt," but even that one sentence sounded pompous!JSUVA2012 wrote:Only if you have an attitude about it, and this post suggests you might.reasonabledoubt wrote:I'm afraid I'll know more about certain things than my professors due to extensive private sector experience which may make them resent me.

1. I'm worried about the debt after law school. Ugh.
2. I'm worried about being 36 when I graduate! Double-ugh!

Don't worry, we have the same sun here on the east coast as you have in CA. At least I could help quell one person's fear!sapp wrote:Chichaca wrote:I'm afraid of going $200,000 in debt, not doing well, and not being able to pay it off.
^ This.
And I'm afraid of missing the sun. I've been in CA my whole life and almost every school I've applied to is on the east coast/midwest. But from what I hear I wouldn't know it was there even if I stayed in CA for at least the first semester.

And Desert Fox, I'd never heard "sectincest" before, but that's great. I see what you did with that, and I like it.

Getting into Cornell, which would be the best school I get into with concentrations in exactly what I want to do.
This means I will have no choice but to finish out my 20's and start my 30's single, in Ithaca. My dating choices will be other Cornell grad students or an incestuous dip into the pool of 400 other law students.

I fear being crushed by debt and ending up in doc review for the rest of my working life.

Re: Fears about Law School
1) That I won't have the policy oriented background knowledge that I for some reason anticipate my future classmates having
2) That my writing skills are sub-par
3) That I'm giving up my liberty by assuming so much debt (no more "I'm bored here, I'm moving to Europe for a year")
4) That I'll get fat and/or ugly from a naturally sedentary lifestyle and all the stress
5) That I'll be undesirable to date (why bother when you can date an undergrad who is younger and will most likely have more free time?)
As a disclaimer, I'm not claiming that all of these fears are rational, but they are definitely there. Out come the demons of self-consciousness and vanity.
Good luck with tackling your fears, everyone!

Its about how the market is saturated with newly minted lawyers and most of them got stuck sweeping floor for MacDonald or Burger King with over $100k in debt.AliceB wrote:Please explain.heyguys wrote:nixxers wrote:let us all share what we are nervous about, so we can make each other feel better.

That I'll find the material unbelievably boring and won't be able to push myself to study enough. Or, I do well enough, do biglaw and ruin my personal relationships.

Re: Fears about Law School
I worry that I won't be on the same level as my peers, not because I don't have the capability, but because I went to Shithole State U for scholarship money and haven't had to work much for my major classes. Simply because I can write intelligently, a skill which somehow most everyone else in my major cannot do, I get A's in my major classes. It doesn't matter if I actually think I kicked ass on the paper, or if I wrote all 10 pages in 3 hours right before class. I'll get an A. I think law school is going to be a rude awakening, and I really worry I am not being prepared enough.

Re: Fears about Law School
I'm scared of:
1) Being the old guy (29 when I start).
2) The whole "huge debt/no job" thing.
On the flip side, I am anticipating greatly:
1) For the first time since my sophomore year of high school just focusing on school and not working.
Putting in my two weeks notice near the end of July will be an amazing feeling.

My boss hates lawyers. I don't know if I should tell him I'm going to law school or just say grad school. I just want good references for later on. =3

Re: Fears about Law School
I get that, but it's not like the bad economy is specifically picking on law grads or the legal industry. It's hitting everyone pretty hard. If we aren't out of this recession by the time we all graduate, there are going to be bigger problems than not getting a cushy big law job.BigFatPanda wrote: Its about how the market is saturated with newly minted lawyers and most of them got stuck sweeping floor for MacDonald or Burger King with over $100k in debt.
