Because it will improve my understanding of the world while giving me the ability to practically assist anyone with my degree if I want to. (also why I plan on becoming a cpa). Because I wont be taking out loans, and I am totally comfortable with the possibility of working at a bar after I pass one. "people who do not understand compounding interest will end up paying it to people who do" (BF) Because I like making a difference in people's lives. I could honestly see myself valuing helping a parent with a custody battle as much as I would enjoy doing corporate law.

Because the legal market is excellent and UCI law school is the best law school in the world. Oh and it has always been my dream to be a lawyer since I am good at school and i will get good grades because I have always gotten good grades.

My situation is a little different, as the Layman Director for a State Client Protection Fund, I saw first hand the effects of "bad lawyering." This is not a universal, "all lawyer's are bad" but I feel confident in saying that there is a need for more good lawyers.

As a counselor in my previous profession, I loved begin able to help others, and serve the public. I was often frustrated with the amount of assistance people got when needing an attorney, and the limitation I had to help. In short, I felt helpless.

Going to school was my opportunity to accomplish the goals I had for myself. Manly, to serve and protect the public, and the public good. And consisted of the aspects of my previous career that I really enjoyed, researching the law and counseling.

I wouldn't go as far as say I want to save the world,as that is just grandiose and unrealistic. But, I would like to think I could do some good. And would enjoy the type of work.

I've had some amazingly bad experiences with punk ass public pretenders, that was my initial motivation. I've evolved as I have gotten older and had kids now my primary motivation is to have a career where I can make a good life for my children, help out my friends and family, and do whatever small (or large or medium) part to make the world a better place. Plus I am not likely to be able to retire at a reasonable age and if I keep working on fishing boats, guiding, turning wrenches, and building shit my body will fail before I can afford to quit working and I'll die physically broken and penniless.

Edited to add: I'm by no means referring to all public defenders, just two. One who got motivated after receiving a letter from a family friend Esq. the other who all but forced me to take a plea on something I didn't do.

Since bachelors degrees don't mean shit. I majored in SW because it interested me (the macro stuff not micro) and I plan to go into PI. Although job prospects are bad they aren't nearly as bad as they would be now for me with my degree/experience. I have full tuition at a T30 in a cheap city so the cost of an advanced degree isn't that bad. I basically just want a job that will make me happy where I can make a decent wage.
