Tip me? What do you mean?

Tips are not allowed at Wal-Mart. They live on the promises of upward mobility and their eventual six-figure salaries.

Not only that, but my current occupation does not allow for tips, per SEC regs. We get salary + commission.

Something positive about the future and the legal field? Don't feel so bad, everyone's in the shit hole right now.

Law school isn't a terrible option if you work hard and go to a decent enough school. While I'm not saying its a rosy and wonderful choice for one and all, attorney unemployment and underemployment seems to be no worse than most other fields. Everyone is hurting, its just that those of us interested in the legal field zero in on the difficulties in that particular field. No worse than a lot of other graduate or undergraduate options, better than a lot of other fields.

Honestly, though, short of going back to UG for an engineering or IT degree you'll be in about the same damn boat as everyone else in terms of job prospects. Just try and keep the debt low and it won't be a suicide situation.

I've heard Engineering and IT are shit now too.

TCR is to go to Nursing school. Unless you're in CA, then TCR is to move away from CA and go to Nursing school.

I think the fact that the government is slashing spending as the economy struggles to avoid another recession is a big reason to be hopeful about the economy over the next couple years. The sclerotic structure of the legal industry also gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling about my job prospects as a lawyer.

Don't come to my state... we opened up 3 new nursing programs, and increased the size of the 8 or 9 already in the state. In about 4 years we are going to be overburdened by brand new ADN/BSN people. It is already hard for some to get jobs.

I don't know about going into nursing. You hear a lot about nursing shortages, but my friends who've gone into nursing or other healthcare positions (dieticians, etc.) say it's pretty difficult to get hired without experience - that the shortage is really a shortage of experienced nurses. Those I know who did get jobs were hired on for only 30 hours a week so that they wouldn't be eligible for benefits. Obviously, it's a small sample and anecdotal, but it shows that no field is perfect.

Depends on the type of engineering. Maybe my engineering friends are a poor example since I came from a top 10 Engineering school. Though, a few of my friends were unemployed for a number months after graduation with Masters, then again there were others who had a job lined up 6 months before graduation making $60k. Which is solid for a Bachelors right out of school.

Nursing seems oversaturated, especially since there are a slew of nursing programs for LPNs within Community Colleges. I think with everyone talking about "Go into nursing!" soon it'll be way to overcrowded in there.

Engineering and IT aren't shit, they are the strongest fields currently. Sure it's a little harder to get a job in all fields, but if engineering is shit than law is a the fucking Hudson. As far as nursing goes, there still is a nationwide shortage. The problem is that too many are focused in nareas that have a surplus. You may not be able to get a job in Atlanta, but you could if you moved to rural Georgia.

Yeah, nursing is in no way a slam dunk. Many of the "nursing shortage" positions are increasingly being filled by techs and other lesser-trained people churned out by the Cooleys of the medical world. Ugh, another field ruined by an explosion of for-profit and "non-profit" TTTT schools...

Though, according to Forbes: Best job for 2011 is Software Engineer. Though almost all of the Top 10 are math heavy professions, so that leaves all of TLS fucked.

http://www.forbes.com/2011/01/07/best-w ... yment.html

Go figure, all the worst 10 jobs are shitty labor jobs that pay little and are being completely destroyed ITE.

All in all, the legal field sucks as much as everything else.

Engineering and IT are doing well, but not fantastic. Everyone is hurting. As for the nursing in rural areas, the same can be said of legal work as well. I'm sure there jobs are possible with solos out in rural Kentucky looking for a new associate, except everyone wants in NYC.

No, there are more lawyers than there are jobs. There are over a hundred thousand more RN positions than there are RN's and by 2025 there is projected to be a shortage of 260 thousand RN's.

I'm sorry but can you tell me where spending was cut. This new agreement cut less than 3 trillion from a baseline spending increase of 10 trillion over the next 10 years. So no matter how you look at it we will add over 7 trillion in debt over the next decade. How is adding 7t to the current 14t for a total of 21t a cut?

Not sure what you're on about, but this is what I was talking about:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/ ... Z120110805

It's happening at the federal level as well, but I trust you know how to use Google News to find that.

Thanks for the interesting article. Hopefully the economy can be revived in the next couple of years but it doesn't look too promising.

Fucking lol. You can't get a job in rural Kentucky unless you're from rural Kentucky. Better luck with NYC BigLaw.
