I think "public service" and "public interest" are used pretty exclusively. Government is by far the single largest public interest employer in this country, but it also refers to employment in non-profit organizations, such as the ACLU.Kulax22 wrote:Is there a difference between public interest and public service? Also, in some places where you'd expect the work to be government work (such as public defenders) it may actually be handled by non-profit organizations. For instance, in NYC public defenders are actually employees of a non-profit organization called the Legal Aid Society which receives compensation from the city for its criminal defense work, but also receives donations and funding from other sources and uses that to provide civil services to disadvantaged NYC residents as well.
