The latter.

Hiring prospects would be at least comparable in both cases (right?). But...

Name of the school you went to sticks with you for the rest of your life (I imagine). You will always be a Cornell/Duke/GULC graduate instead of NYLS graduate, and I think there is some pride to be had in that (at least for me), and more importantly could be used for picking up girls at a bar.

Also, all friends/connections you make at LS are also going to be from C/D/G instead of NYLS and I image that, on average, connections from T14 are going to more useful than connections from TOP100.

Drake/Albany/Mercer/NYLS are not good examples. For an interesting discussion, I would use compare very low rated T1 schools with against the bottom half of the T-14.

Latter any day of the week. Even if the gap in the quality of education from a T14 to a TTT is not as large as the rankings suggest, and even if graduation-day opportunities are comparable in each scenario, earning your JD from a school like Georgetown/Duke will favorably impact your life in subtle ways forevermore. It raises eyebrows. It's a credential that demands respect. Especially if you're on a secondary journal there. Granted law review and top 5% is a great accomplishment anywhere, but people are prestige whores. Not to mention that the relative intelligence level of your peers will differ substantially, and as somebody mentioned the contacts/friendships you make here can have a great impact on your life going forward.

change it from top 5% to literally #1 and the nod goes to NYLS. as it stands, lower T14

It's hard to get #1 when you go to school in the Village though. So many fun things to do

I'm just astounded that 50 people voted for the former.

keep in mind most people have a horse in this race.

The folks going to T14 are going to be biased towards the latter, as they want to feel smart about their investment.

The folks going to non-T14 are going to be biased towards the former, as they want to feel not-screwed.

Not me. I'm not at a T14 and I think the T14 is more impressive. The schools listed have negative prestige. Thats a tough sell no matter where you are in the class.

First of all there is absolutely no shot at an "Elite" BigLaw job, even if you are in the top 5% at TTT. You can just go look up the statistics at NALP. I would be willing to bet the bottom 30 kids at any top 14 get better jobs and do much better in the long run. You might get that freak of a chance #1 who makes it into big law but out of a school like U of Florida or U of Georgia, try that out of Stetson or Cooley and let me know how that works out.

Top 5% in a group of people that are probably extremely competitive is slightly more impressive than middle of the pack at a school where employment prospects are so much better (and thus less of a need for cut throat competition). Top 1/3 I'd go with T-14, but median I'll go with the TTT grad.

If you ask which one is better off, in general probably the T-14 grad, but that's not how I interpreted the question.

ITE, people at T14s that don't begin with "Ya", "Harv", or "Stan" are probably just as competitive as are people at low ranked schools. And these schools have people who are better at being competitive.

Its law school of course its competitive. And what you think the people at HYS are less competitive? How the hell did you think they got there?
Long answer short, its easy to put it in an analogy:
Whats more impressive, having a batting average in the top 5% in the history of the Florida Marlins or the top1/3 of the Yankees?
Its easy to be at the top when your going to school with a bunch of kids that suck.

I don't believe that most of the people that go to TTT's are a "bunch of kids that suck."

The people I know at Yale are definitely not competitive. I sometimes wonder if they actually learn anything. I don't know anyone at Harvard or Stanford. My guess is that Harvard is probably as competitive as the lower T14s (thanks to mandatory LP), while Stanford is somewhere between barely-conscious Yale and gun-your-heart-out CCNMVPDCNG.
