Just wanted to jump in and correct this - I did a bunch of research and the issue wasn't the computer, it was the OS. When the Surface first came out it was running a paired down version of Windows 8 called 'RT' which had some under the hood issues all around on top of the run of the mill issues with Windows 8. If/when you upgrade to 10, it drops the RT and works fine. Check with your school because they might be using a weird program, but this solved 99% of the issues I ran across while looking this up.woodchuck78 wrote:For what it's worth, I've heard that some schools highly recommend against Surface Pros because the software they use for online exams isn't compatible with them, so may be worth it to check with schools to make sure that's not a problem.
Basically just upgrade to Windows 10 if you haven't and you'll be fine with the surface.
This is really good advice and quoting for posterity:

One other important consideration, at least sometimes SofTest isn't great about supporting new operating systems on day one. When you buy your laptop (or update your operating system) check that the installed version of Windows or OS X is compatible. For example, SofTest didn't support El Capital (OS X 10.11) until about three months after it was officially released by Apple.
