Have you read The Darkness series by Turtledove? I really liked those, but I am an admitted fantasy/sci fi fool.
Can't say I have. I go more for the alternate history stuff. Turtledove is a really good writer though.
It's WWII with magic and mythical creatures. Now I want to re-re-read the books.

He wrote this book with Richard Dreyfuss (yes, the actor) about an alternate US where the Revolutionary War never happened. British mystery novel in style. I loved it. Read it three times. Wish I could remember the title. Lost it years ago.
The Two Georges. Great book.

The ones I mentioned were WWII with aliens. I'll have to check those out.

Also, I really enjoyed World War Z. Did y'all know that Max Brooks is Mel Brooks' son?

+1.

My old man bought this book in an airport and he hates alternative history (huge sci-fi geek though). Loved it and mailed it to me (side note, has anyone tried lending a book via kindle?). Couldn't put it down.

I missed the MLK connection in it, super embarrassed about that

If you want to get a basic introduction to law firm economics, especially w/r/t leverage, a good book is Tournament of Lawyers. It mainly relates to pre-ITE, but many (and probably most) biglaw firms still operate using the model, thought the partnership tacks are longer.

If you are going to a school that requires Con Law during 1L year, read a little bit of American history too, especially about the New Deal era.

None of this will really make you a better law student, so only do it if you would find it fun anyway.
Any specific books you recommend in these categories?
Sadly, I don't. I didn't really think to read about those things until I started learning law. Before law school I listened to the 'Ascent of Money' documentary on Youtube, which was pretty good.

Kafka, Gunter Grass, and Bulgakov if you are literary. Rabelais if you are super literary and have the time.

Here is what Justice Stevens thinks: "Ken Manaster’s 'The American Legal System and Civic Engagement' to the general reader; Leon Green’s 'Judge and Jury' for law students."

I read Lawyer Boy last night (it's a really quick read); I'd probably recommend it. You're not going to take anything too meaningful away from it, but it's really entertaining.

Jumping on this train:

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet - David Mitchell
Mr. Peanut - Adam Ross
Out Stealing Horses - Per Petterson (if you like your fiction Scandinavian and extremely depressing but beautifully written)
It's Fine by Me - Per Petterson (legit better than Out Stealing Horses)
1Q84 - I am admittedly a Murakami shill, but I fucking loved this.
Necropolis - Santiago Gamboa (the end doesn't quite live up to the beginning, but it's really interesting)
Second Person Singular - Sayed Kashua
The Round House - Louise Erdrich (AMAZING. deserves all the praise it got and more)

Also I second the recommendation of Where'd You Go, Bernadette - I irrationally hate Seattle and I still really enjoyed this book. Excellently constructed.

The Time Machine Did it, as well as other books by John Swartzwelder.

For those who don't know, John Swartzwelder is the genius behind many of the early Simpsons classics. Just go to his wiki page and read the list of episodes that he wrote (his story is pretty wild as well). The dude is quite literally legend. His books pretty much involve a Homer-esque detective. They are very short and absolutely hysterical.
