I've heard it can be of great benefit to get a degree in the sciences or technology (at least a double major or minor), not so much for law school admissions but for being more well-rounded seeking employment later on. True?

Which major do you think best prepares you for law school? I don't mean which major will make you most employable or get you the highest GPA for admissions, but which will give you the skills in reading/analysis/etc to prepare you to succeed in law school? Sociology perhaps? Philosophy?

Philosophy, probably. More reading/analysis/argumentation/semantics/hair-splitting/synthesis than just about any other major out there. Can't say how useful any of that is for the actual practice of law, but it's universally regarded as some of the best graduate school preparation you can get.cl101 wrote:Which major do you think best prepares you for law school? Edit for clarification: Not my major, just throwing it out there ftw.
One philosophy of mathematics course i took was the greatest educational experience i've ever had, so i cannot imagine how intellectually orgasmic this major must be.

No matter what your major, take one or two accounting classes. This in invaluable for law school (tax & estate planning) and the practice of law.

The faculty list alone is enough to bring a philobro to climax.superdingle2000 wrote:laotze wrote:The single greatest undergraduate degree on earth:

To be fair, lots of them are visiting, but STILL: Thomas Pogge, John Hare, Jason Stanley? I mean, it's no Princeton/Oxford/Notre Dame lineup, but that ain't nothin' to shake a metaphysical stick at.

I wonder if 5 years of biglaw on your resume can make your resume strong enough to get accepted into the program
Always need a backup plan if law is truly that awful

Heading into 1L: English and Art History. Wish I had done English and Econ with an A Hist minor. Currently boning up on Econ in my spare time.

Re: Current Law Students/Grads: What was your major?
Thanks for the feedback everyone...I'm thinking double major (perhaps with a minor)
First major: Bio
Second major: Political Science, HIstory or Philosophy
possible minor: Art History
Like bio so I have a backup if law doesn't work out (would apply to PT school). I enjoy poly sci, history and philosophy, ESP history, but feel poly sci/philosophy may better prepare me for LS. And art history's probably completely useless, but I just LOVE the subject. I guess I don't really need to minor necessarily...I could just take as many classes as possible. I don't see myself doing something art-related in the realm of law, so it probably won't mean much whether it's really legit or not

Re: Current Law Students/Grads: What was your major?
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm good at science, but not great, so I am a little concerned about what a Biology major would do to me GPA sophomore/junior year. I'm at a school that doesn't offer Finance, so I'm leaning Economics or Business now. I think I'd ultimately feel more fulfilled with a career in law than pt, and in the end, liberal arts is really my thing. I am definitely interest in Econ/Business though, and feel those majors may set me up better for OCI (even if English/Philosophy majors may have a leg up in the actual course load during law school). Thoughts? Any econ majors out there? How'd did it work out for you come law school admissions/OCI time? I'm hoping for BigLaw
