I was DEFINITELY not criticizing anyone for choosing to spend their money any particular way. I was criticizing people for saying they NEED to buy certain expensive things.

Dude, relax. You seem awfully defensive about how other people furnish their apartments. If you want to live on a mattress on the floor that's great. I'm not judging you. But not everyone's back can take it. Some people actually need to sleep in a real bed.

ETA: It's not that expensive. I buy cheap furniture at Ikea too, but everything adds up. You act as though people don't need to cook and have somewhere to eat or have somewhere to study or put their books and clothes, or do anything else other than sleep on a mattress on the floor. Just trying to be realistic and gave a very low estimate for setting up an apartment.

For what possible reason would someone "Need" to sleep on a "real bed." What does it mean that their back can't take not sleeping on a real bed. I promise that there is no extra back support from having a bed frame. I dont even believe there is any added support from a box.

I just dropped about $2500 at Ikea to furnish a studio. I'm 32, well past the age where holding the TV up with cinderblocks is cool.

I could have gone cheaper in basically every single item, but I didn't want to spend 3 years miserable living with plastic furniture, so I went with 'fairly cheap while still looking like real furniture' instead of 'cheapest possible.' I could have probably gotten the same number of items for half what I paid, if I were willing to get Ikea's cheapest.

Well, let's just go ahead and slide all the way down that slippery slope and say that no one really "needs" a mattress at all. Or even an apartment. It's perfectly possible to survive living under bridges, after all.

There was a thread awhile back about a law student at Cardozo who chose voluntarily to sleep on the streets. So, yes, a totally valid choice.

But in all seriousness, I had a sleep disorder caused by sleeping on a futon. I was told to get a proper bed and I've slept much better since.

This is the truth. My and my SO's bed is not on a frame and height when I'm standing is about at the top of my knee. Makes certain activities... tricky.
