You aren't truly balling until your watch costs over $1M.

If you're going to spend over 250k+ on a watch the definite choice would be this one:kalvano wrote:You aren't truly balling until your watch costs over $1M.

Look at what powers it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTj__XKPl5M
I'd never spend even $10000 on a watch... but this one complication makes 275k sound almost reasonable

It's an Orient Ray. Automatic movement, pretty sweet. And surprisingly cheap.

Hey guys, so most of your watches are pretty expensive... I was looking at either
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SS ... d_i=507846
or http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Mens-Quartz ... bs_watch_1
which one is better?

I have a Seiko with the same band as the 1st one, but I"m not a big fan of the watch face on that one. I much prefer the watch face of the 2nd choice, so I'd go with that.joetheplumber wrote:Hey guys, so most of your watches are pretty expensive... I was looking at either

Patek Phillipe or GTFO.
Seriously, though, the Jaeger Lecoultre Ultra Thin is a steal at just over 5k.

Re: Watches as a lawyer
There are Jaeger-LeCoultres on ebay for 400-600 dollars? I'm sorry but I think you are incorrect or they are fakes. An entry level Jaeger-LeCoultre is going to cost you at least 5k. I don't know any high end watches that do no feature an accurate movement. Of course, as with any watch, over time you may loose a few seconds but if you constantly wear it or put it on a watch winder you shouldn't have any issues. Even if you don't, all you simply do is wind it and set the time before you put it on and your good to go until you let it sit for an extended period again. I own an bell and ross and Uboat and when not wearing them I put them on a watch winder. I've owned them for roughly 5 months and haven't had to set them since the day I bought them.Doorkeeper wrote:I just don't see the point in spending multiple thousands of dollars if it's not going to have a durable and accurate movement that lasts for a long period of time. At that point you're just paying for a fashion accessory for your wrist. The only exception I can think of is if you need a solidly engineered watch for extreme environments. I'm much more of a fan of Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, or Ulysse Nardin on the high end. The latter two can be purchased on ebay for $400-600 if you look.Mal Reynolds wrote:I love Panerais and I don't think I would care if they didn't keep perfect time. When you are spending that kind of money on a watch you aren't simply buying it to tell time. If that was the case a 20 dollar timex from walmart will keep just as good time as a 100k AP. You spend that kind of money on a watch to make a statement and because you are, IMHO, buying a piece of art. If you really get into watches you will learn to appreciate all the engineering that goes into making them run.
No offense to you or anyone else that is a rolex fan but I can't stand rolex. I can't stand that if you were to go on the street and put a 50k AP next to a 5k Rolex and ask which is a high quality/better/more expensive watch 9 out of 10 people would say Rolex. Rolex is the brand that everyone who knows nothing about watches thinks is the top of the line--I can't stand it. Sorry for the rant but I loathe people who think wear rolex or talk about it like it blows all other watches out of the water. I swear I'm not making this up but my friends Dad, who is a huge watch collector, always tells the story about how he was at a party one night and was wearing a limited edition Franck Muller that retailed for about 27k. He said some obnoxious guy at the party was going around flaunting his stainless rolex. He got to talking to my friends dad and asked him if he got that watch at sears and preceded to tell him about his rolex and how rolex is the best of the best and how you know you've done well if you own a rolex. My friends dad just nodded and brushed the guy off and walked away.

Re: Watches as a lawyer
I agree. Panerai gets a bad rap and many consider it to be the watch every Yuppie working in finance wears. While it is a shame that a company as old as Panerai hasn't engineered its own movement, there is nothing wrong with a stock ETA movement. The Basic ETA movement is a work horse and functions great. Both watches I own have stock ETA movements and the movement runs just as smoothly as an Omega which is famous for its in house movement. I don't think one can go wrong buying a Panerai and I'm sure you will get more compliments about a Panerai than a rolex or omega.Mal Reynolds wrote:I love Panerais and I don't think I would care if they didn't keep perfect time. I love IWC also and am hoping to add an IWC Big Pilot to my collection in the near feature. Right now I am saving for a nice diver watch and am leaning towards an Omega Planet Ocean.

Personally, I don't think you've made it to "the big leagues" unless you're sporting one of these.

They're definitely more standard/commonplace than some of the other great brands, but they're tough as nails and have that rep for a reason.
People do think they are the end all, be all though. They're not.
