Re: How do we spread the TLS Gospel?
I think your heart is in the right place. Unfortunately, TLS can be like giving books to people that can't read.
I'm in law school now, and I'm amazed at how many people showed up with no idea about supplements, GTM, LEEWS, or outlining. I had a classmate tell me that I shouldn't start outlining until November.
I tell them about TLS. I tell them to check out posts from: Scribe, Arrow, Xeoh85, JayCutlersCombover. You know what they do? They roll their eyes at me. They look at me as if saying, "how do you know?"
I don't. That's why I'm sending you to a place where people who do know have written extensively about these subjects.
Here is how I see it - Most people know how to lead better lives, yet most don't. The amount of information that is readily available to people living in developed countries is unprecedented in human history. Yet the most googled topics as of this morning are: Terrell Owens, Andy Rooney, Jenna Lyons, and Tony Romo. Interestingly, one of the top search topics is "student loan forgiveness," (I wonder how many of those are law school grads - how ironic).
If you're going to preach the gospel, expect a low conversion rate. Think of it like a school teacher. If you can just reach one student, it will have all been worth it!

If the person is your friend or asks for your advice, give it to them (or better, just give them a link to TLS or JDU or LST or even xoxo and let them explore for themselves). You just have to know your audience and how to present it.

One of my best friends from high school has a 3.3, and got a 160. Her parents offered to pay for power score so se can retake; I talked to her for 2 hours trying to tell her everything I learned here, and she still thinks she can work in dc if she goes to a TTT in Ohio. Sometimes, people have to learn for themselves, if you've tried your best.

Or were you diligently trying to learn more about law schools and just came upon the site? If you are like me, you are the latter. You found this site because you cared enough to do some research, learn more, and be fully informed. I really like law school because not everyone can be a winner. It isn't that I enjoy seeing people lose out on things. I just think it is the first step in our lives that is halfway reflective of the real world (in that not everyone is going to win). You did your research, and you are in a better position because of it. If those people with the TTTT brochures didn't do theirs, then that is their fault. Like I said, in real life there are winners and losers. So while it is certainly noble of you to want to share what you found, I wouldn't go out of my way. If they are mature and prudent enough, they will find their way here sooner or later.

How did I find this site? Well, I was interested in law school and used a little known thing called....shhhh...keep this a secret....Google.
Let them search this shit out. They need to do their research. If they don't, well, their bad.

Re: How do we spread the TLS Gospel?
Don't call it the TLS Gospel.North wrote:Today my University held its annual Graduate and Professional School Expo and, unsurprisingly, what seemed like every single one of the worst law schools in the nation set up shop in our union. They had colorful tablecloths and card-stock information sheets about their world-renowned concentrations in space, sports, and international human rights law.
During the Expo, I had several conversations with various acquaintances about their plans. Almost all of them had a fistful of brochures and business cards from TTTTs and spoke very confidently about their plans to go a TTTT and then set up their own firm/fly around the world doing international law/go to all their clients games as their sports law counsel/et cetera.
Here was the problem: I'm on TLS and I know that 90% of the information these kids were basing serious, expensive life decisions on was almost entirely false; that going to a TTTT will only land them $150,000 in non-dischargeable debt; that they will probably never, ever work in the largely imaginary fields they're so excited about; and that they will likely struggle to find a job as a lawyer at all.
How, though, do you tell somebody any of those things -- how do we evangelize those without the TLS wisdom -- without sounding like a TOTAL DOUCHEBAG? I spent most of my time nodding and offering noncommittal "yeahs," but I felt like I was doing them a disservice by not crushing their plans. Was not saying anything the way to go? I suppose I don't go up to every person I see outside smoking and offer them information on the detriments of smoking that I think they need to know. What do you think?
If this has been discussed at length in the past, I apologize. There wasn't an easy search-term for this.

I tell my friends about this site and the knowledge I've learned from it. Anyone else? They're on their own. I mean, I'd give them info if they reached out to me, but I'm not going around preaching this stuff.

I tell them TLS is a fun read and it's nice to have someone as obsessed as you are and more eyes on your PS and DS are always helpful, but, let's be honest, TLS is NOT gospel. Take it with a grain of salt.
I direct you to the thread about how is this guy's cycle real so you can see the infallible wisdom of TLS.

Re: How do we spread the TLS Gospel?
In the vein of "not everyone can win in life" maybe we should be asking IF we should be spreading the word at all. TLS, in particular, attracts a certain kind of person that even other law school websites don't. I made a thread about this earlier--I was on LawSchoolDiscussions, and everyone on there was asking about their chances with a 3.45/155.
I think we're a pretty self-selected group here who are especially neurotic (and insecure), and so we're actually more receptive to the message. Hell I used to think BigLaw was guaranteed if I went to CCN, now I've seen the light. If you force people in here there's a good chance they'll just turn out like that Larry David kid who has his fingers in his ears in multiple threads, going on about how T30s can guarantee a comfortable job and a comfortable life.
I'm incredibly thankful for this site, and I'm on here pretty much 4 hours a day, in part because it's like a cold bucket of water on my head, and also in part because I like a lot of the people here (because they're like me). What if every law school applicant came by here? How many of them would listen to what people say?
Maybe just leave things and go with the mentality of "if you build it, they will come."

Re: How do we spread the TLS Gospel?
Dear TLS Members,
Hi, this is Ken DeLeon, the founder of TLS. I just wanted to thank you for your posts. I am very proud of the amazing community TLS has become. I created the site because there was a lack of great and free information on applying to the top law schools. This site has been created for and is most heavily utilized by very bright students applying to the best law schools. The reality is that this target audience seeks more insight and knowledge into what they realize is one of the most important decisions they will ever make.
To paraphrase George Orwell, "All people are equal, but some people are more equal than others." [I almost wrote that this phrase is from Animal Farm and is originally about animals, but I realized TLS members would get that right away.
I will continue to strive to make TLS an even better community and thanks for all the appreciation of the site, that is by far my greatest reward.

1) Get into law school
2) Make enough lulzworthy posts so I don't get referred to as "junior" on TLS.
