What to wear in law school? Forum

When I was an undergrad we had this guy who called himself Miles Standish. He dressed like a pirate.

Had one of these too lol. He regularly wore a cape

Our guy was in to dragons. He wore a heavy, faux-velvet cape that was trimmed with pewter rivets. It had gold astrological signs screen printed on it.

Our guy always wore a sleeveless spandex shirt, had a waistlong ponytail and was always blaring Dragonforce on a boombox.

My favorite is the physics guys who are so genius they are borderline autistic. This one kid (I say kid because he looks no older than 14 - maybe he is) would wear this awesome shirt he made himself. It was a tye-dye tee with felt berries and leaves sewed on, but he didn't really know how to sew apparently because they berries would always fall off in class.
He also wore a plush pillow hat.

I wonder what happens to them after graduation. Do they start dressing normally, or live on the margins of society for the rest of their lives? And I can't look them up on facebook because who knows their real names--they're always "that guy."

I wonder that all the time. And everyone knows them by a particular moniker, so we never know their real name. I know at my school whenever you mentioned "Spandex Shirt Guy" everyone would know who you're talking about but no one knew his real name.

In the crazy ass city I'm living in this summer, I see this dude walking around all the time in ONLY the shortest feasible cutoff jeans and a cowboy hat. His skin is like sagging leather. Maybe he got tired of wearing a pirate suit?

I start law school in August so I don't know what everyone else will be doing, but I plan on dressing a bit better than I did in undergrad. I think it's important to look the part, and though I wouldn't define what I will be wearing as very formal (at all), I won't be wearing shorts and a T shirt to class everyday.

It'll probably be something in the realm of khaki shorts and a button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Can't say I don't see people doing that in undergrad, but you get my drift.

I've been grappling with this question myself, and I'm not really sure what to do...

I'm starting law school this fall, and everything I've read on the forums suggests 90% of people in law school wear "regular" clothes (i e jeans, a shirt, etc) and that most people think the idea of dressing a certain way in law school is not necessary and even somewhat ridiculous.

That's actually not a big deal to me, I do agree that law school ideally should be different from undergraduate in mentality, and perhaps this should be reflected in dress, but if one wants to dress however they feel comfortable, that's fine.

My problem is that I enjoy "dressing up" aka I like suits, ties, the whole nine yards. Unfortunately, I was born in the wrong era, I should have ideally gone to UG and law school some time before the late 1960's, and I would have fit in. I actually just..... like the way suits/ties/etc look, and while to some degree part of my motivation to dress that way is definitely tied to "dressing standards" 70% of the motivation is just because I like how it looks and it makes me feel more confident. (no, I don't need clothes to feel confident, I just said "more" confident).

I don't plan to wear suits or anything in law school, but I was thinking a sports coat, tie, khahkis, and loafers - while definitely more dressy than 99% of the class, wouldn't be overdressed to the point of being completely ridiculous. I'm a pretty friendly and approachable guy, I started dressing like that in college and my friends think I'm crazy, but they all stuck around. Can I hope for a repeat in law school? For what it's worth, I think half the reason people got over it was because they saw I was self-confident enough to outlast all the jokes.

It's just clothing. If people are going to reject you as a person because of your Chinos, well...that seems like their problem.

I agree with you and also prefer to dress well (but mostly conformed in LS). People will talk shit about you behind your back though, I promise you that. But it's not that big of a deal. One thing to keep in mind is that once you have a job, you'll be wearing those clothes every day and won't stand out at all.

To be honest, I dress quite similarly in UG. Everyone thinks I'm weird, but I enjoy dressing like that -- it's just my style, I guess.
