Re: Printers?
Unless you're planning on printing a lot of pictures or things that must be in color, I'd go with the laser. You can get a good one on the cheap, and the cost over time is much, much less.
Most any of the Brothers ones should be good- but as said above get the auto-duplexing feature. Also, take a look at pages printed per minute. If you get impatient, don't get a real slow printer.

Hmm yeah I was thinking of the all-in-one more for the scan/copy/fax features, as I seem to need those surprisingly more often than I would think I would. Not really sure it's worth the sacrifice in speed though - as well as cartridge costs.Eugenie Danglars wrote:Unless you're planning on printing a lot of pictures or things that must be in color, I'd go with the laser. Yeah...hm. I always used the school scanners since I was less likely to need something scanned on short notice than printed on short notice. It usually worked. If I needed more than a couple copies, I just went to staples.kazu wrote:Hmm yeah I was thinking of the all-in-one more for the scan/copy/fax features, as I seem to need those surprisingly more often than I would think I would. Re: Printers?
I've got an all-in-one inkjet, and I would get a laser if I could do it all over again. I'm still pretty close to buying a laser and scrapping the inkjet. Factors that influence my decision: I do almost all of my work at home rather than the library, and where professors ban me from bringing a laptop to class I like to print out my reading notes and bring them with me. I've replaced my ink cartridge two or three times now, and it's too expensive in comparison to a laser.
I've had my eye on this one:

for a while now, though I haven't done a lot of printer research.

Thanks for the insight. If you don't mind, why'd you buy the inkjet over a laser in the first place?dailygrind wrote:I've got an all-in-one inkjet, and I would get a laser if I could do it all over again. I'm still pretty close to buying a laser and scrapping the inkjet.

How'd I miss this? That's a good point.. I think I'll go for a laser, esp. with that dailygrind said.Eugenie Danglars wrote:Yeah...hm. Re: Printers?
Anyone know of any good deals for just a basic printer with scanner ? I forgot how often I might actually want to use a scanner and the Brother Laser doesnt have one...... I know best buy always has printers on sale for like 30 bucks.

Go with laser - preferably Brothers. Samsung has some good models, too.
Inkjet is just too much hassle for what it's worth.

This is relevant to my interests as well. I'm actually looking at picking up this printer and toner cartridge for <$100 shipped. Toner is good for 2600 pages so I'll have 5200 pages worth of toner right out of the gate.

Re: Printers?
I have the newest Brother duplexer laser. It doesnt have a scanner though, and I know i've seen some cheapo inkjets on sale for like $29 w/MIR . It would only be used in situations when I need a scanner or my Brother dies (ResolutePear wrote:Go with laser - preferably Brothers. Samsung has some good models, too.

I don't think this model has auto duplex. I loved that about my old laser printer.thelong wrote:This is relevant to my interests as well. Re: Printers?
I found a printer useful. A black and white no frills printer should be fine though. I did use my scanner once or twice, but I could have lived without it. I printed a few color documents as well, but it was for non-law school purposes.
You want to print out WestLaw/Lexis cases using the WestLaw/Lexis printer. However, having a printer at home can be convenient for printing something at a pinch (occasional case, outline, notes, memo, or anything else you need).

I've had really bad experiences with HP. Would strongly recommend against.kazu wrote:Shameless bump as I will be needing to buy a printer for law school soon as well. Laser vs. all-in-one inkjet? Any specific recommendations (besides the ones already listed above?)
