Huh. Guess I was just imagining carrying my -92 through four years of chem and physics. (Engineering major, chem minor) Thanks for setting me straight.

As juvenile as this debate is, I consider "science" as "natural sciences", not engineering, etc. Maybe define it as any science that was around before the graphing calculator was invented.

Newton, Faraday and Joule and Boyle and Avogadro would be baffled to discover that physics and chemistry only came into existence after Casio invented the graphing calculator in 1985.

NASA's priority is to accomplish a project efficiently, student's priority is to learn the craft. These two are not compatible.

Why don't we teach 4th graders to use calculators instead of having them memorizing multiplication tables? By god who doesn't have access to a calculator at their finger tips nowadays?

IMO it's pretty ridiculous to argue for aesthetic qualities in a discipline (science) that is purely utilitarian.

I think i need to replace the batteries on my Ti 89 Titanium...it's been a while...I think I love the solve function the best, it saves time? Feel free to share your favorite functions on the Ti 89; however, they need not be related to the Titanium edition.

My Ti 89 Titanium edition has been used in physics, gen chem, organic chem, biochem, cal, and the list goes on. It has saved my life on more than one occasion. It has been with me through the ups and downs, through thick and thin.

That's vector calc. Which I took as a freshman in 1997, before graphing calculators were banned from it, even at my "crappy school."

I have never had a class where I could use a graphing calculator from Trig on up since my junior year in high school. I guess classes were easier back then.

I just brought up the first math exam I saw at MIT. I have never seen a proper math class, mine or ANYONE else's, allow a calculator. And as for physics/chem, scientific calculators only.

TBF I've never seen a proper engineer use electronic cheating; every reputable employer I've known eschewed the modern devilry of ProE and Solidworks for hand drafting. If you can't draw it, you don't really understand it. Same for calculators. They do their calculations on the backs of envelopes rather than on TI-89s because it's the right way to do it, dammit. Multiplication with a machine? Might as well legalize steroids in baseball. I for one yearn for the good old days when men were REAL men, women were REAL women, and asbestos was considered a REALLY great building material because people didn't know any better.
