For those living in DC, quick question. I'm coming from a place that is the very definition of suburb. Grocery shopping means taking your car once a week and putting all the packages in the trunk. I feel pretty naive here, but how do you most people go grocery shopping in DC, or any other really urban area for that matter? Seems difficult to carry 6 or 7 grocery bags on the metro or walk 10 blocks with them.

My roommates and I share a collapsible cart the we take to the grocery store with us when we plan on getting more that a couple of bags worth of groceries.

Depends on where you live. If you're in nova, there are a ton of supermarkets you can walk to. Within about 10 blocks of my apartment there are 2 grocery stores and a ton of CVS/Walgreens with large food options. However, people eat out a lot. If you're in DC, it depends on the area. I think Foggy Bottom has a Trader Joes. You could also take the metro one stop to Rosslyn where there's a Safeway. It's tough if you're on the red line.

Also, a lot of people use peapod (or similiar services) where they just deliver groceries to your door that you order on-line. I think if you order over a certain amount, its free? I could be wrong about that though.

I'm 6-7 minutes walking from a grocery store, and I never have a problem getting my bags back. If I'm just getting a couple things I carry the bags; otherwise, I also have a little folding cart. Cabs in DC are fairly cheap as well; for example, you can take a cab from Dupont to Trader Joe's in Foggy Bootom for like 5 dollars.
