+1....would love to do this, but really can't justify going on a several thousand dollar trip when I could get a job as a waiter back at home and at least save a decent amount of cash.

not +1.... while a good argument... traveling is great and you get to see many things/people/places that are different than the states... or you can work and save a couple of extra thousand dollars... and also, when else are you going to have time to travel for 6 months... when you retire ? what if you die before retirement ?

1L here. I traveled abroad for 5 months the year before law school (I would recommend it to anyone). Seriously, relative to your future salaries and the amount of debt most of us are assuming I think it's not really so much money. Right now, you may have time and no money. But in a few years you will likely have money and no time. I'm a huge fan of travel. I hope many of you get to do it a bunch the next half year.

I'll be teaching in Spain until May and then backpacking Europe for a month before checking back into reality, finding a place in Berkeley, and assuming mind-boggling debt.

I also bought a book on the Berkeley suggested reading list...figured I should do something to at least acknowledge law school while I'm here.

remind myself daily how great my wife is for putting up with me

Finish reading Proust's "In Search of Lost Time"

I think I can only fit in like 5 of these goals. Looks like work and my masters will suffer.

If I go to law school in NYC: work through the summer until law school to pay my current rent, then quit, find a new (cheaper) appartment with a roommate.

If I go elsewhere: work through the end of June, then quit and move back home for a couple weeks. Then find a new appartment whereever I'm going to school.

I also don't understand the traveling thing. It's something I very much want to do, but I just don't have the money. Even working right now before I start law school, I need that money for when I start law school. Do you all get your rich parents to fund these trips or what?

I took out a $10,000 loan to travel through 14 different countries my junior year. Absolutely worth it!

And no...no moneyz from parents.
