I take a different approach, granted I am planning to run for local public office, and am involved in politics. I make my facebook account as public as it can be and know that anyone can probably find anything they want about me. I write articles on a semi-regular basis and post them as well. I take the approach that if it's online it will *eventually* get out, so I might as well just be sure I'm proud of it all and post it straight away.

It would take something seriously messed up for an adcom to reject you based on something on your facebook. Just don't have anything illegal up (coke, pot, dead bodies).

um...welcome to 2010? People are being fired from jobs and not getting them in the first place because of facebook. It shouldn't be too much of a stretch to see others not getting into schools because of the same.

I've talked with a lot of employers in my area (Philadelphia), and it was pretty much consensus that as long as you don't have evidence of doing something illegal, they're not going to care. Drinking in college is evidence of being normal, if anything. Job fairs at my school confirmed this. I'd like to see some of the pages of the people that got denied though, if you don't have common sense as to what is reasonable and what is excessive, then they probably deserved getting the axe anyway.

Teaching is obviously different, because that's what my UG was mainly about... but they were against even having alcohol on your profile.

yah my fbook is public. im pretty open about my life in general.

it has lost me a job once before, tho (being open, not fbook). i still 'keep it real' out of convenience/laziness

I don't know about you all but I'm obsessive about "de-tagging" myself from certain pictures, too, because I have no idea what my friends' privacy setting are.

I'm no facebook expert, but wouldn't keeping yourself tagged give you more control over who can see those pictures?

Get used to being someone who people will actually trust with incredibly valuable or embarrassing secrets and extreme financial responsibilities now and skip the whining in PR in 2-3 years.

This is common sense. Who's more likely to behave professionally: The guy whose publicly visible profile picture shows him shirtless standing on his head over a keg, or the one wearing a coat and tie?

FB gets a bad rap because of the way some people act on it. People make fun of me because I have my parents, and cousins, and aunts, etc as friends.

To me it is as much a family networking tool as it is for keeping up with "so called" friends. I ignore farms, and people sending me fuzzy drinks etc, and I never see them again. I get to learn things about my little cousins and nieces and nephews that I care about, but not enough to call and ask.

My pics are appropriate, and my comments are entirely harmless, weather, sports, major family events, etc. I find it to be a very useful tool. I can't imagine anyone, employer, school, etc having any issue with a person taking advantage of such a tool like an adult.

Now if they start judging me by some of my friends from junior high etc, I could be in some trouble. I usually delete people as friends if they become overly obnoxious.

As long as you have a cell phone, you'll be connected. I've never had something like a party solely be on facebook.. without friends texting, calling, or telling me about in person. I'm a 0L, but I highly doubt law school functions are different from college ones.

How necessary is this? I deleted my FB account some time ago, partially because it was truly annoying, partially because there wasn't anything on there except parties and social events, and mostly in protest as to what I thought of as egregious privacy violations (such as when they changed the ToS without notifying members).

Would not having a FB page showing how cool I am and showing off my diverse social circle and group membership/photos of cool stuff I've done be harmful? Would they interpret lacking facebook as showing lack of social/professional drive? Should I direct them to the social networking sites I do use?

i am a member of asu law class of 2013 fbook group. there are ~25 other members already. there are great updates about the university, the law school and the surrounding community (great for students new to the area). if i didnt have an fbook account, i would be capitulating the opportunity to connect w classmates in this way. its definitely a great way to connect to the many students who have fbook but likely dont have linkedin (which is a lame site). its easy for me to say since i'd have an fbook account anyway, but i suggest that you reconsider what if any drawbacks there are to having a facebook account.
