People didn't get super dressed up at my school this year, but they were more dressy than most people in undergrad (ie. nice jeans & shirts, dresses, skirts, nicer pants rather than sweatshirts/sweatpants). I sort of like it because I enjoy dressing nice & all that & its nice not to feel stupid wearing a skirt/dress, I think its because everyone is older & prob. feel they have to be more professional in law school. But there were also guys/girls that would wear t-shirts & jeans.

I got sick of sweating my butt off walking around Manhattan in a full suit, so I sat in on some classes in NY and was fine with jeans, nice shoes, a fitted t-shirt (grey or a deep colour), and jacket... Seemed fine (the jacket made it work).

As for my personal wardrobe, I used to dress quite well (my closet has racks of great clothes, more on the conservative side), but then I started working... After a week of work my supervisor pulled me into her office and said I should change my wardrobe and come to work as I would go to class (read: as a normal Hawaii college student, complete jeans, a shirt, and flip flops/sneakers). I think it was a self-esteem thing (I overhead her saying my clothing made her uncomfortable, that it was too formal... Seriously? I would wear a nice skirt, shirt, and pumps!). Regardless, I went out and bought some shirts from Gap, after a year of working with her the style stuck... Now when I pull out items from the back of my closet people make comments... I can't wait to move and get back to my clothing roots (sans comments).

As for LS - I will mix it up, old school me, but also Jeans/Jacket kinda thing...

There's one guy at my school that wears a wife-beater to class. In addition, he raises his hand a lot with a plethora of hypos for the professors. The entire class enjoys his attendance.

Seriously though, anyone else a big fan of the tie + jeans look? If someone asked me, "Did you or did you not have a good reason to wear that tie today?" my answer would be "Yes, I had a good reason. Because it's baller. Now leave me be, peasant."

I dunno but that just looks plain stupid to me. You either wear the full casual set or you don't. Don't mix two things that don't match or you look like someone who doesn't know shit. Just my personal opinion.

Traditional class dress at my college for males is a blazer and a tie. It is not a requirement, but close to 50% of the guys do it. In addition to respecting tradition at the school, I think maintaining a professional environment in the classroom is an admirable goal. However, despite wearing coat and die to class in both high school (required) and college (not required), I plan on dressing down for law school to avoid the "tool" label which might be appropriate if I was the only one in class doing such. Furthermore, I do not think that "dressing up" (suit, coat&tie) is absolutely necessary depending on your profession. For example, the real-estate lawyer down the hall from where I work rarely sports a tie and my dad is an orthodontist and he wears a short sleeved collared shirt to the office everyday.

They look terrible. And I get the feeling a disproportionate amount of children & unsophisticated people wear them. That's partially why fashionable people steer clear of NASCAR hats, too.

The disdain here for any level of dress beyond jeans and T-shirts is incredible. If you were born ahead of the fashion curve and were wearing jeans and ties before those pretty boys in GQ, then kudos: you sure have me beat. I don't know jack about fashion and I've been sporting the same black Skechers, blue jeans, and leftover American Eagle T-shirts from high school for years, but now I'm making an effort to make myself at least presentable -- polos, casual button-up shirts, sweaters, and so on. It's less about being cool and more about looking like I'm older than fifteen.

I agree. It's laughable, really. Wifebeaters are awesome and ties are toolish. I'm not sure whether I'm going to law school or a Dukes of Hazzard set.

I completely respect people's choice to dress casually. I sense, however, a gonzo reverse-elitism, the supporters of which demand people dress down--or risk being labeled a tool.

I think you can impress more people by dressing down. You will look like you don't care what anyone thinks, and in some ways, that is one of the goals of a 1L. Just shower regularly and you will be more than fine.

I don't know why anyone would 'dress up' for class. I'll be sporting the mesh shorts as far into winter as possible.

I will be wearing jean shorts, t shirt, dirtbike goggles if I ride to school, with black and white tats on one arm and colored tats on the other. My hair is past my shoulders and probably has some color in it, braided in corn rows. I think I am going to be "that guy". Always have been.
