I didn't say I'll do a good job because I dislike criminals. I gave two reasons for wanting to be a lawyer.thelawdoctor wrote:knowing you hate the enemy doesn't mean you'll do a good jobBobson wrote:I want to be a lawyer because I want to prosecute criminals, and I know I'll be good at it. Whether that's military law (I'm an Air Force vet) or working for a county attorney office is fine with me.
1. I dislike criminals.
2. I know I'll do a good job as a prosecutor.
RC much?

ANYWAY TL;DR I want to help athletes & kick people who try to sleaze like ^ in the ass. Oh, and I love law. I have many more reasons, but there're a few tidbits for y'all. (Yes, if you can't tell, I haven't fully decided between Sports Law or International Business Law... I want to do both, QQ)

Do not think that being a prosecutor will give you free license to shit on someone. There are ethical rules that you are bound to follow that are taken seriously. If you get off on hurting criminals, other prosecutors will notice and will probably stay away from you. Defense attorneys will stab you in the back every single chance they get. If you want more details, shoot me a PM.

Re: Why do you want to go to law school?
Genuinely wondering, but I keep reading a lot of places that those two don't really exist as general fields of practice. Or, rather, I keep reading that International Law doesn't exist in practice (which I think would also cover International Business Law) and thought I read about Sports Law in a long list of areas promoted by law schools that don't actually exist in practice. Again, I'm actually curious here - could someone please clarify?ANYWAY TL;DR I want to help athletes & kick people who try to sleaze like ^ in the ass. Oh, and I love law. As for reasons I want to become a lawyer personally, I rarely do things for just one reason. So I'll give you several reasons in no particular order which, taken as a whole, make me want to go to law school, although the weights for each particular point may be unequal. For starters, I think being a lawyer matches up well with my skills set. And no, I'm not talking "liking to argue". I'm detail-oriented, really big on researching things (and I enjoy it), and I'm good at and enjoy reading and writing. I also like public speaking, if it comes down to it. I'm also actually interested in learning law. I don't have my life perfectly mapped out yet, but I think law school will leave the options open to me that I'm interested in. I like advocating for and advising others in general, but particularly those who are disadvantaged in some way, eg those who are disabled, children, immigrants, etc, which leads me to believe that I should look into public interest law, although I'm leaving my options open. I'd like to make enough money to be able to support my parents in their old age, along with myself, although I plan to live a relatively modest lifestyle, and while I'm not expecting to rake in big bucks, I do expect for a career as a lawyer to be able to make this lifestyle possible. I don't mind working long hours and, in fact, when I don't have work to do I generally create work for myself. That's all the reasons I can think of for now, although there are likely more. Hope that was helpful.

Re: Why do you want to go to law school?
You're right about Sports. If you want to do Sports Law as we think about it, you'd realistically be doing Contracts, Anti-trust, etc. -- all the facets of basic Business/Corporate Law. You'd have to be obviously more well-versed in "Sports & Entertainment Law" than basic Business Law would cover, but... yeah. For example, NFL's CBA and all their crap.. that's all anti-trust law. All the lawyers and law-based agents who deal with athletes are mostly dealing with Contract Law. So it's not an entirely separate field of practice. It's just the area in which you use Business/Corporate Law.shootforthestars wrote:Genuinely wondering, but I keep reading a lot of places that those two don't really exist as general fields of practice. As for International... I have to disagree there. I know a lot of lawyers who do "International Business Law". Basically, from what I've seen from them, you have to learn the laws (and likely do more classes/get your area-specific JD or something similar, or if they accept your JD take something like the bar) in the second location. Basically, ok, to clarify further: the lawyers I know who do this work with American corporations who are expanding/have expanded to the Middle East, and/or corporations that want to do business with other corporations abroad. In such a case, you'd need to know the laws of both areas. That's how I see that International Law is in fact a field of practice, albeit a sub-field of Business Law.
Further, I'd imagine if you wanted to use Law to get into the UN or some such, you'd do International Law, with an added focus on PI/rights. Maybe not, but that's just how I see it.
Course I could be way wrong about some/all of this, haha. But HTH!

Prosecutors have discretion in who they can prosecute. I'd say there are a lot of personal feelings involved.Clyde Frog wrote:Bobson wrote:I didn't say I'll do a good job because I dislike criminals. Because I didn't know what else to do with my life. I also like to argue and I enjoy competitive grading.

I think pretty much the majority of gradstudents (JD,MBA,whatever) who roll into it straight out of undergrad are #1 if they are honest with themselves.MKX wrote:Specialhawk wrote:Because I didn't know what else to do with my life. I also like to argue and I enjoy competitive grading.
#2 seems to scream "I am going to kill myself when I find out what mocktrial actually is"
#3 just screams "Gunner Apprentice".

Re: Why do you want to go to law school?
The K-JD thing gets taken too far on this site. A lot of law students with "WE" did a year or two of something uninteresting or unsatisfying and were just as rudderless when they entered law school as the next person. On the other hand, I went to law school straight from undergrad knowing what I wanted to do, which is what I am doing now. I know others in the same boat.thelawdoctor wrote:I think pretty much the majority of gradstudents (JD,MBA,whatever) who roll into it straight out of undergrad are #1 if they are honest with themselves.MKX wrote:Specialhawk wrote:Because I didn't know what else to do with my life.
