My father is a brilliant engineer too. When it comes to numbers, physics, and the sciences, the guy is way above my head. But when it comes to social smarts, the guy is just a flat out idiot. Brilliance in one area doesn't necessarily mean brilliance in another, and especially when it comes to scientific v. socially minded folks.Wholigan wrote:My fiancee's grandfather is a brilliant engineer who feels that way. Re: Religion and Moving in with Girlfriend
The OP came here for advice on how to deal with his girlfriend's parents' ignorance, and what he got is a debate over whether or not they might be right. Just to add my two cents to a couple of running debates...
- Living together before marriage is usually a good idea. If you're two totally incompatible people its better to discover that before the wedding.
- Respecting one's parents ought to involve listening to their advice openly, not following it blindly.
- An otherwise intelligent person can hold specific stupid beliefs. I've seen antisemitic chess grandmasters and sexist Nobel Prize winners.

Yea, because Jim Crow laws and believing people should formally commit to each other before cohabitation are EXACTLY the same.Wholigan wrote:"Intelligent" people in his generation fought viciously to keep the institutions of segregation and Jim Crow alive too. You might object to his analogy, but can you really disagree with the point he's trying to make? Smart people sometimes hold ridiculous views.BackToTheOldHouse wrote:Yea, because Jim Crow laws and believing people should formally commit to each other before cohabitation are EXACTLY the same.

The analogy was that otherwise smart people are capable of unintelligent thought--in his analogy it was RELIGION (from which the parents derived their beliefs on cohabitation-although he really wasn't addressing the issue the OP presented at all), not fucking cohabitation, compared to racist laws and traditions. Point being that people aren't always intelligent in all facets of their lives.

Christianity is Dark Age bullshit. And opinions borne of religion, such as the chastity meme, don't fall far from the bullshit tree.

No, you're right. It's way better for kids these days to listen to people who are trapped in loveless, sexless, unfulfilling marriages. Those are the people who can offer the best advice about what it takes to make a relationship successful. Tradition is always what's best, no matter what.BackToTheOldHouse wrote:Yea, I wish stupid old people would just shut up and listen to the smart progressives in our society.Stringer Bell wrote:My fiancee's grandfather is a brilliant engineer who feels that way. Hmmm... segregation was once seen as a "traditional" value. Both beliefs seem to have been/are the most prevalent in the "Bible Belt." Not to mention the related anti-gay sentiment. It is going to be every bit as tough to explain to our grandchildren why people fought so hard against gay marriage in our generation as it was for our grandparents to explain away the fight against segregation in their day.BackToTheOldHouse wrote:Yea, because Jim Crow laws and believing people should formally commit to each other before cohabitation are EXACTLY the same.Wholigan wrote:"Intelligent" people in his generation fought viciously to keep the institutions of segregation and Jim Crow alive too. Good analogy is good.
I also like how you analyze the analogy by repeating it in a sarcastic tone.

You are at the stage in your lives when you have to do what's best for you and your relationship. I would explain to her parents that you respect their views but do not share them. In the end I imagine you would regret living separately more than you would regret upsetting her parents. If you do end up getting married, this disagreement will eventually be forgotten.

Man, if you think that cohabitation before marriage is "progressive," well, that's just the funniest goddamned thing I've ever heard. Maybe if you're from the Bible Belt.

I like how none of the people outright advocating that the OP marry the girl have bothered to respond to this post.paratactical wrote:I never said that you had to live together before marriage. You need to learn to read.BackToTheOldHouse wrote: FTFY
Also, FWIW, there is nothing wrong with not wanting to live together before marriage or wanting to get married before you have sex or what have you, as long as that's what you and your partner decide.
The issue ITT is that the girl's parents won't let her and her partner make the decision and that's where the problem is. Posters telling them to get married and the chick's parents should STFU.

Here's my argument: people should make decisions and then live with the outcome of those decisions. If one outcome is that your baby-momma parents hate you, deal with it.
