I kind of dig the whole Lenovo flat black utility schtick. I've used a t430 for work this summer and that keyboard, breh. The whole computer is a masterpiece of well thought out, basic quality design/construction. But then again I feel the same way about the MacBook Air. I just don't know if I can get over my perception that macs are overpriced and built for losers that ride fixies.

I saw the X1 carbon in store the other day and its the ugliest laptop in the history of laptops. Even for a thinkpad, its a new level of fugly.

I think I may be forced into getting an Air. I returned my Zen book

People seem to like the look of the X1. Granted I haven't seen one in person but I think it looks decent in pictures.

I got a carbon X1 and I think it looks good. It's sleek and pretty in its own utilitarian way. I've definitely had uglier (and heavier and less functional) laptops.

FYI, I had a Yoga a couple months back and returned it. The fan was too loud for me and it should be lighter IMO. The gray shell also makes the laptop look old and dated. I hope you got the orange one.

Yeah, it definitely has its negatives but I just wanted something comfortable to use in bed/the couch and am comfortable with the drawbacks at the used CL pricepoint. It's boring, heavy for a ultrabook, but it works for me. Thankfully no wifi/touchpad issues and haven't noticed the fans yet.

Experiencing PC regret, and want my Macbook back. Between law school tasks plus my photography/photoediting hobby, do you guys think a 15.4" would work or is that size pushing it for the price? I've obviously considered the 13" but it doesn't seem ideal for creative tasks. All told, though, I'll be using the laptop primarily for law school work. Halp.

For work, I've used a few lenovos. Maybe they are "business" configured, but they suck in every way. Slow to load things, freeze all the time, etc. I will never use a Lenovo unless I am required to.

sounds like you got poorly spec'd boxes. lenovo only manufactures the vehicle for components (with the exception of the lcd), not internal components which would be responsible for poor performance.

I believe the Lenovo Thinkpads always went for build quality over high end performance parts (much like Apple but durability/keyboard versus sleak design focus) and that would definitely leave you with noticeable differences in performance over the last couple of years...but modern day processors are so over-the-top powerful that you can use an older generation i5 undervolted and still have no noticeable difference in performance for everything from photoshop on down.

Add on to that the ease in which one can upgrade a laptop with an SSD/8gb of ram these days and performance is definitely no longer an issue for the vast majority of the population.

I believe it will. 4th gen Intel = Haswell unless I'm mistaken

The interesting part will be to see what they do for a GPU

From what I've read, price point will be around $1200

If you want build quality, Lenovo T-series are hard to beat.

You won't have that bad of a time with that resolution on a 14' laptop but it isn't asking too much for more in 2013 as far as laptops go.
If you are willing, it is relatively easy to upgrade the SSD/RAM on most Lenovo laptops for a fraction of the price yourself.

Given the price difference, it definitely isn't worth it. I would personally go for the cheaper one.

If you're spending over $1000 on a laptop, I'd wait for the T440s. You can also save a considerable amount of money on that new T530 if you upgrade the SSD/RAM yourself but again, not sure if that's an option for you.

Here is a T530 on ebay (manufactur refurbish) with the same i5, 180gb SSD, 900p resolution, 8gb ram for $750/739.

That may be your best bet if you are comfortable with the manufactured refurbish (Tons on ebay, you may be able to find a better deal than that)

Slow and large HDD (Very likely can be replaced with an SSD if you are willing to do it yourself though)

I think they are worth it. They come with the same one-year manufactured warranty as buying a new laptop but there is some added risk inherently.

Lenovo refurbs tend to be in like new condition. But damn I wouldn't spend a stack on a refurb Thinkpad without Haswell

Basic specs are i7 4700mq processor, 8 gb ddr5 memory, geforce 750m gpu, and decent specs for the rest of the hardware.

1. This seems like a great deal but am i spending too much? I realized this is a gaming laptop and the primary purpose of my laptop is for school. Would i be better off buying a thinkpad for the same price but with lower specs?
2. How do ideapads stack up against thinkpads? Is the drop in durability that noticeable? How do they fare against other brands like asus, hp, toshiba?

its a complete waste if you aren't playing games. Get something lighter and with better battery life. Look into the x230

The 410p is about as good as you're gonna get for power vs price for a laptop. (Other contenders include the Sager7330 - better screen, slightly more expensive) You can also add another GPU to SLI 750s in the future if you ever need to with the ultrabay addition.



But yeah, as power goes up, so does heat, power consumption (even when doing non-intensive tasks) and weight. So if you don't want the added power for any particular reason, best not to get such a laptop.


The ideapad build quality isn't going to compare to the thinkpads. Thinkpads are markedly better.


FWIW, I was in your shoes and I ended up following champagnePapis advice in getting a slimmer, lighter laptop that is less powerful but more efficient for browsing the internet/notes/netflix

the barnes and noble gold discount makes the x1 carbon touch very similar to the non-touch version in terms of price. but i don't think you can configure the i5 touch w/8gb of ram which is a dealbreaker for soldered ram. is that just for me? am i going to have to get the non-touch?

I was hoping to purchase a cheaper alternative to the MacBook Air, but it seems like the t430 I want (ssd, 1600x900, 9-cell) is basically the same price...
