The Nine is a much easier read- the type of book you could read laying on the beach during vacation. I think it was written by a journalist if I'm not mistaken so it's not overly challenging.JazzOne wrote:I've been meaning to read that. I frequently buy books from the law section, but I keep skipping over that one. I recently bought a book by Scalia called Making Your Case. I'm enjoying it, but I wouldn't recommend it for a 0L. He talks about things like standards of decision that I wouldn't have understood without a semester of law school.2009 Prospective wrote:I highly recommend "the Nine". It's a much more enjoyable read than Closed Chambers IMO.SamSeaborn2016 wrote:I don't plan on reading any actual cases but I enjoy books about the law and the supreme court such as:
Closed Chambers
A People's History of the Supreme Court
I'm not going to pretend they will give me any kind of edge once I start school but the information is fascinating.

I wish I could time-skip a year to find out which people ITT gunned themselves to median.

I look forward to next January and watching them all freak out over their first grade while they have to wait for the rest.Kohinoor wrote:I wish I could time-skip a year to find out which people ITT gunned themselves to median.

HAHA! Ahem... umm, yes, I mean, I already know, but can you please tell Mr. Desert Mouse what outlines are. I'm a 0L as well (creator of this tread - thanks for great suggestions btw) but would just like to make sure everyone knows what these basic outlines are.Desert Fox wrote:Hey guys I'm an 0L, and I want to get my outlining done before Admitted students day, what is an outline?
Again, I already know of course but can you just let HIM know. Don't PM it... umm, I'd just like to make sure it's sent so can you make it public?
I'm totally making fun of myself for not knowing shit about what's in store for next year. I feel like a virgin going to prom in two weeks and walking back and forth past the condom isle pretending I know what kind I'm looking for.
I mean I never knew about magnums back then.... now I do of course.

Worse than pretending like you know what you're looking for is actually believing you're gonna get laid.fonzerelli wrote: I feel like a virgin going to prom in two weeks and walking back and forth past the condom isle pretending I know what kind I'm looking for.

I haven't started classes yet for my second semester, but I imagine it will be a somber mood next week. The thing is that even if you succeed in law school, you are going to be surrounded by people who are disappointed. Grades are coming out for my first semester right now. I can't even enjoy it because a lot of smart folks are saying, "ZOMG, median, doc review ITE!!!" It's humbling.fonzerelli wrote:<----- Refer to my tar JazzOne. Outlines are basically condensed notes on the course that you take over the semester. You can't do an outline before school. Period. They can be organized by concept, or (less helpfully IMO) by rule or case. Start them early so you can make a mini-outline that is even more condensed (like 10-15 pages) for finals. Don't get caught up too much in the outlining process. The best thing to do would be review concepts every week, far in advance of finals, and start taking practice exams around halloween. You would be mad solid then.

Yeah, I should have taken a hiatus from TLS when grades came out. My grades are all over this board, and I can't take it back now. Still though, I get a certain emotional release by posting about grades, and it helps keep me grounded.TTT-LS wrote:Does this help explain the "don't disclose your grades on TLS" advice I was giving earlier? I think people just sort of begin to feel what I was talking about *after* 1L grades come out and the awkwardness begins. And for those who have success (congrats again man), you are absolutely right: it is humbling.JazzOne wrote: I haven't started classes yet for my second semester, but I imagine it will be a somber mood next week. Based on a few recommendations, I picked up Gideon's Trumpet with the last of my Border's gift cards. Better be good, I am holding ALL of you accountable.

More of the imagery of a release being emotional

If you don't know every detail of Martin v Hunter's Lessee, you will fail out.

Yes. This. Read this case carefully. If you are still at all interested in reading cases when you are done, then you probably don't have a life to lose by starting early anyway.JazzOne wrote:OP, read Ashcroft v. Iqbal. It's a real page turner.
