Does a drinking ticket by my college count?

Post by iaiava » Tue May 03, 2011 8:14 am

I am reading all of these blog posts about how people writing addenda to explain away under age drinking tickets. I have absolutely zero history with the law on any level (local, state, federal) however, I did incur a number of underage drinking tickets by my college during my freshmen year. Is this information that law school admissions will have access to? And if so, is an addenda needed in this situation?

Thanks in advance,

I think that falls under the scope of disciplinary action by the school, so you should disclose them in an addendum. Unless you have like 30+ tickets, adcomms aren't going to care.

I can't recall the exact nature of the issues, but I believe there were two or three drinking tickets all freshmen year.

Request a copy of your disciplinary record from your school. Disclose everything in there.

Some may tell you to disclose things not in the record, but I would only do so if you recall enough about them to make it an accurate disclosure. Writing an addendum that says "I think I was disciplined a few times in freshman year for drinking" doesn't demonstrate that you take those incidents seriously. If you can say "I was cited for A on dates X, Y, Z. I paid a fine and remedied my behavior in my sophmore year, having no further violations." that will show the proper level of concern.
