ILoveYou wrote:Hello future Pritzkerites (Pritzkerians? Not sure we ever decided)! I'm a current student at NU law; I saw this thread while reading through TLS in class and thought I'd chime in for anyone looking at neighborhoods. I highly recommend Lakeview! It's just the best neighborhood. Tons of great food, bars, parks, and whatever else you could want really close by. Depending on where in the neighborhood you land, it's generally affordable, and a convenient ~30 min commute to school by either the red line or express buses. Sort of inconvenient if you plan on doing bar review a bunch--only 1 or 2 a year are in Lakeview and most seem to be in River North--but don't choose where to live based on bar review.

Just north of Lakeview is Uptown, parts of which are really nice and parts of which are areas you probably don't want to walk around alone at night. Which part you're in will be really obvious. The commute from Uptown can start to get too long for most people's taste, though.

As for other neighborhoods, Streeterville (right around the school) sucks a lot if you plan on eating food, going out at all, or doing anything not related to law school. I can't stress enough how much the neighborhood our school is in sucks. Seriously, unless walking to school and being around your younger classmates 24/7 is that important to you, do not live here.

River North is too expensive and you won't be able to enjoy the nightlife that much while you're in law school anyway. Go there for an occasional night out; don't live there.

Gold Coast is a nice happy medium, although still pretty pricey.

Also don't sleep on Ukrainian Village! Fantastic neighborhood, plenty to do, and close enough to school that the commute isn't a pain.

Anyway, feel free to pm me. Good luck getting here and enjoy your last summer of freedom!
I'm a 3L and native Chicagoan who has lived in several different parts of the city. I have strong feelings about this post.

I don't think Streeterville is that bad and I recommend it for 1L (and only for 1L). I lived in Streeterville during 1L (and moved there from Lakeview) for its convenience. It's expensive, yes, but I found the convenience during 1L to be worth it. There's only 24 hours in a day and you're gonna be spending a huge amount of those 24 hours studying as a 1L. Living a 5-minute walk from school freed up an extra hour of my day, 5 days a week, and it allowed me to spend that time on me. I was able to work out, sleep in, and do other things that I think had a positive impact because I was so close to school. I looked at it as an investment in myself and my future. Also, being around classmates isn't a bad thing? Idk why the poster above looks at it with such disdain but I like my classmates and being closer to them was nice during 1L. It was easier to study with people or just hang out with them. If you're not from Chicago and don't know anyone, don't you kinda want to live closer to the only other people you do know?

I'm a big Lakeview and Lincoln Park fan and think they're great places to live. The commutes aren't bad but I think it's worth it to weigh the value of your time during 1L and I felt that Streeterville was the better option for me based on the time it takes (and stress) of commuting.

Uptown is too far.

Gold Coast is literally just north of streeterville so it's like almost the same neighborhood. Anything not in walking distance to school isn't worth it at all.

Ukrainian Village is a hellish commute to school.

River North is fine if you can afford it and are still a decent walk to school.

And finally, bar review moves every week and is only in River North like half the time (probably less?)

Nice to see someone else chime in to give a different perspective!

I'll reiterate that I really couldn't disagree more about Streeterville. It's just a horrible neighborhood, and the convenience of never really being more than a few minutes from school is not worth how awful it is in my opinion. Anyway, I have always liked being a bit away from school. The commute isn't stressful in the least, it has never impacted my studies, it didn't prevent me or anyone else I know from working out or getting enough sleep, and I actually like having the time to sort of decompress. Some of the only time I was able to carve out for pleasure reading during 1L was on my commute, too. Different strokes and whatnot.

Being around classmates is grand, and I didn't at all mean to give the impression that I look at it with any sort of disdain. I don't (and really you'll find that you're living around some classmates pretty much whatever neighborhood you live in) but I think Mullens overstates the value of being near school. In fact, I would say that the people I knew who lived in Streeterville during 1L were if anything more stressed than those of us who lived farther out, and it seemed like a big part of that came from always being "on" and in law mode, always stressing each other out about classes and job searches, etc. Living a bit away from school doesn't at all preclude you from hanging out with classmates, but it gives you way more opportunity to get to know people other than law students, which is only a good thing. Again, it has nothing to do with not liking classmates, but I found having non-law students around and in my daily social life essential to my sanity. To each their own, though, and I suspect any 0Ls reading know whether living a short walk from school is going to be important to their success.

A few final thoughts: Uptown is certainly not "too far"--I know plenty of people who live there and commute downtown, either for work or to go to NU law. If you don't go too far north of the Buena Park area the commute isn't bad; maybe 45 minutes. That's towards the long end of acceptable for me, but it can certainly work for people. I also know several law students who live in Ukrainian Village and have made that commute myself without any problems. I don't know what supposedly makes it "hellish," but it isn't that big of a deal and people do it every day.

Anyway, there you have two very different perspectives on where to live during law school! I'll get out of your class forum now and just say again good luck to everyone!

I don't understand why schools give you an email address before you even confirm you are attending. I just signed up for it and set forwarding so that I can make sure I got any correspondence. It just seems like an unnecessary step right now when they already have our current personal emails.

for the last 2 yrs my numbers on lsn have largely not put anything down for scholarships (not sure if 0 or just not updated) but the 4 who have all had different amounts: 45, 60, 90, 105! I have no idea what to expect. Would be happy to fall in the middle of that.

hey guys, recent admit here.

I'm not quite sure how to address the "please assess your position for merit aid" portion of the scholarship application. Like what does this even mean???

Basically, I decided to take it as a chance to say:

"Hey, here's a neat thing I'll be bringing to the class thanks to experiences I've had and things I've done that doesn't show up through my LSAT/GPA. Also I've been financially independent for a while, but I'm not exactly loaded, and there's no rich relative chipping in to pay for my law school."

And then tagged something on at the end about how happy I am to be in, and insinuated pretty strongly that I'll come if it's financially reasonable for me to do so.

Checking in. I just registered for the April 7/8 ASW. Pretty decent rates at the Warwick-Allerton Hotel on Michigan Avenue for anyone who is still considering going.
