growing up in the suburbs is the reason i am so beta and meek today.

growing up on a farm is the reason i am so outdated and boring today.

i literally cannot even function in large social settings and have a crippling inability to have fun due to growing up in the burbs.

how did burbs --> amta today? I feel like burbs force you to hang out with people because there's nothing else to do.

also at least one of your hobbies seems quite fun

oh, i was being facetious. i had a great time growing up. high school was kinda droll, but other than that it was cool because i played 4 sports so i didn't really have time to realize the burbs sucked. outside of HS i was also home schooled for 10 years, so my burb experience is probably different.

I don't know anyone who grew up in the suburbs remembering their childhood as anything but lifeless, boring, and sheltered.

I maybe think of 8-13 like that, but I definitely don't think of 14-18 like that. I had tons of fun in the suburbs. I feel like I grew up at the tail end of people not worrying so much. When people had cars but not cell phones! I used to have an address book and would just show up at peoples house and knock on the door to see if they wanted to do anything. I could be gone for 12-14+ hours without a plan, without my parents worrying about me, without a dollar. that was a great time, even if it was a bit lifeless and sheltered, and its a bummer I don't think we'll be able to let our kids have that much fun.

For me it's weird because after I moved out of NYC to the suburbs, I could walk to a nice downtown area with major stores, like a little city, but I lived on the very edge of my town, separated by a highway, so no one lived in my neighborhood and couldn't walk there with me unless they got dropped off. People didn't tend to come over either. To make matters worse, my little town combined into a town 3X as big for high school, and that town was separated by a mountain/reservation, so no one ever wanted to drive the 15 minutes to my house. Little things like that matter, because if I lived in the town that I was actually closest to that had the downtown, it would feel less isolated.

I guess it's only my suburban childhood that was lifeless. I wasn't fortunate enough to live that close to a big city and everyone lived in gated neighborhoods with bylaws and with bored neighbors too obsessed with them. Neighborhood Associations and the Parent Teacher Association were our mafia.

I believe that. pretty sure way more of the church I grew up in was home schooled than public schooled. (Outting myself here I guess: I was home schooled)

Distance from an international airport is probably a good metric for judging how rural one is.

Idk, I'm boxed in on 4 sides by cornfields and still only an hour from an international airport

I'm two hours from one and live in a small (50-60k) city. Although our airport does fly to O'Hare and DFW tho.


At the same time, never more than 5 mins from cornfields (or a ranch in this part)

I live outside of a city of 5k (only city within a 20 minute drive), super rural

Yeah I wasn't saying I was rural! We are the only city 50k+ for about 8 hours West (then you hit Denver) though.

Will be interesting to see culture differences from experiences like yours to LS. My friend grew up in rural Western KS and went to GULC after going to our very family-atmosphere state school. Was a bit of an adjustment for him haha

I mean, I'm going to Duke so not much of an adjustment for me from my college town in terms of size. Now cultural there will likely be a difference between myslef and many of the students, I will admit that.

I'm hoping to land in a secondary market so that I can avoid changing my whole lifestyle around living in a place like NYC

yeah I got a whole bunch of very interesting and not entirely logical theories about these (and other issues) from different teachers haha

I'm never 100% on what qualifies as suburban.

I grew up in a city, but a pretty small one (5th largest in the sate) that was basically a suburb of #3 but turned into it's own city. My life was not urban by any means, but I also don't think my life was suburban either. People who grew up suburban, did you grow up in a development like an hour away from a skyscraper or just in a smaller town?

Also, are there other terms beside just urban and suburban?
