As a psych/neuro man, altruism is basically fake. More of a "doing things to help out the gene pool" type of thingRigo wrote:You're painting this as a little too altruistic.chargers21 wrote:Living in the suburbs even though they aren't pretty or fun or unique or whatever. The schools are generally better than city or rural schools. More connections are available than rural places, and less hustle and bustle than in a cityKeilz wrote:

Lower crime rates. Better parks. Backyards and private space. Less population density.chargers21 wrote:The schools are generally better than city or rural schools. More connections are available than rural places, and less hustle and bustle than in a cityKeilz wrote:

I'm two hours from one and live in a small (50-60k) city. Although our airport does fly to O'Hare and DFW tho.chargers21 wrote:Idk, I'm boxed in on 4 sides by cornfields and still only an hour from an international airportRigo wrote:Distance from an international airport is probably a good metric for judging how rural one is.
At the same time, never more than 5 mins from cornfields (or a ranch in this part)

I feel like I'll follow the normal trajectory and see my activity here drop off once starting 1L - I'm really here bc there's no one else in my immediate friend group whom I can relate with in this process. Once we get to school, that's all we have. Maybe check in every once in awhile but not much... whoops I guess

Yeah I wasn't saying I was rural! We are the only city 50k+ for about 8 hours West (then you hit Denver) though.chargers21 wrote:I live outside of a city of 5k (only city within a 20 minute drive), super ruralDodocogon wrote:I'm two hours from one and live in a small (50-60k) city. Will be interesting to see culture differences from experiences like yours to LS. My friend grew up in rural Western KS and went to GULC after going to our very family-atmosphere state school. Was a bit of an adjustment for him haha

I went to parks more when I lived in brooklyn than when I lived in the suburbs. In the suburbs I would just play in my yard. I really liked nature growing up so I have good memories of the brook in my backyard, but other than that I don't remember much of a difference. I only lived in NYC until I was seven though, but all of my mom's friends and family were in the city so I remember just being around people more often. But definitely went to the playground often. They're always within walking distance. We walked more as a family in the city, because now everything is just a five minute drive. Suburbs are probably easier for the parent, due to more space.chargers21 wrote:The schools are generally better than city or rural schools. My mom commuted (and still does) over an hour from the suburbs to her job in NYC (and so does my dad), and that's the part where I remember not liking the most. They weren't home after school and that caused a lot of scheduling conflicts and I was home alone often after school.

Most suburbs blow if you work downtown in a major metropolitan city with traffic. Sometimes halfway into town even sucks.

wow - really harsh. I grew up in the suburbs and it was way better than "lifeless and boring" although, yes, it was sheltered. I don't know many elementary/middle school kids who grow up in the suburbs who particularly care that their lives and surroundings are less cultured/more homogenous than children that grow up in cities. In high school, yes, the limited options in terms of entertainment started to become more apparent, but I completely understand why my parents moved where they did and I appreciate it. I look at my hometown and my years there fondly. It isn't a place that I would want to move back to at this point in my life, but I attended great schools, lived in a very safe neighborhood full of other kids my age to hang out with, had a backyard and green space to run around in, was close to the rest of my extended family, etc. etc.Monday wrote: I don't know anyone who grew up in the suburbs remembering their childhood as anything but lifeless, boring, and sheltered.
eta: did not live in a gated neighborhood and knew very very few people who did.

I grew up in the suburbs (mind you, it was like a 20 minute drive to a big city and 45 minutes to Miami) and my childhood was far from lifeless and boring.

I maybe think of 8-13 like that, but I definitely don't think of 14-18 like that. I had tons of fun in the suburbs. I feel like I grew up at the tail end of people not worrying so much. When people had cars but not cell phones! I used to have an address book and would just show up at peoples house and knock on the door to see if they wanted to do anything. I could be gone for 12-14+ hours without a plan, without my parents worrying about me, without a dollar. that was a great time, even if it was a bit lifeless and sheltered, and its a bummer I don't think we'll be able to let our kids have that much fun.Monday wrote:I don't know anyone who grew up in the suburbs remembering their childhood as anything but lifeless, boring, and sheltered.
