After the comment about the Legal Writing prof not being a prof, the TA (a female) told him he was being disrespectful and he started yelling again that it was actually the prof who is being disrespectful by using a title she didn't earn. He gets aggressive (verbally, not physically) really quickly, so no one really wants to confront him.

My Lawyering section has an actor in it. He's a really nice guy, but sooooo much drama.
Not a pun. He has an issue with nearly everything.
Not a notable actor you'd know, a community theater type.

This is the coldest of takes. Our torts professor, who literally wrote the book, hates torts and already pretty much thinks this, but he acknowledges that the legal theory just doesn't pan out. If the gunner follows through and writes this note, he will secure himself as the slowpoke of the legal worldBearlyalive wrote: Oh, and apparently he's already working on a note topic of how all tort law is wrong and would be better conceived of as property law. We spent about 10 minutes in one of our tort classes with him talking about his position.

No real gunners in my classes (which means, it's me, right?). Only two people that come close just answer questions regularly and are much less concise than they could be.
There's one guy in my section who is somehow a master of avoiding cold-calls. Once he was asked maybe 5 questions over a 10-20 minute discussion of a case, explicitly on the facts and minimal application, when usually in class a person is on call for the entire class and does full facts, application, hypos, etc. He also has yet to be called for anything substantive in any of our other classes as well.
eta: in other news, I've almost completely eliminated the need to buy/bring lunch by filling my calendar with catered lunch discussions. And sometime we'll get dinner provided if we have a late meeting, class, or training session.

Re: Abandon A1L Hope, Ye Who Enter Here (1L thread)
I so want to take advantage of the free food, but my Contracts class ends at 12 and all the events start at 12:10. And my Contracts professor tends to keep us 1 to 2 minutes over. By the time I get in line for anything decent, its already so long that the food will be gone by the time I get in.
I mean, I guess I could eat greasy cheese pizza every day at the less popular events, but there's a limit to how desperate I am for free food. And I can take naps if I go home to eat, since my break between morning and afternoon classes is almost 3 hours long.

Checking in!
Same. Free food is great but it cuts into my ~3 hour break. Have you all been attending the various lunch panels/career talks/etc. offered, and have you found them helpful or interesting at all? I haven't gone to any and am worried I may be missing out.Bearlyalive wrote:

Yea. My K professor is bad about letting us out on time as well. So I end up with pizza fairly regularly. Luckily it's not too greasy, but it can't be good for my tummy. Lol at having afternoon classes though. I'm done before 12:30 (when our events start) and have the entire afternoon to do whatever...like avoid my casebooks! So I usually pull them out and then take a nap in the library. I have a pretty comfy spot now. As far as the events I have attended, most of them have been interest meetings for student groups. Sometimes there are two that I am interested in, or one that I am less interested in than the other, but the less interesting one brings Chickfila, so it's really a difficult decision sometimes. I doubt you're truly missing anything since you have 2 more years to get acquainted and join groups, but some of the talks here are interesting. And it gets me thinking about questions I can pose to profs that I don't have classes with this semester, to get a jump on friendship.daisrt wrote:Checking in!Same. This is me so far. We're in week 6 and I have yet to be cold called. I know it's coming, and probably all at once, and probably on the day I am least prepared. Karma's gonna be a bitch.lymenheimer wrote:There's one guy in my section who is somehow a master of avoiding cold-calls. I got cold-called for the first time on Monday and survived. My general strategy is just raise my hand occasionally during discussion and make a short, substantive comment; that way my name gets crossed off the seating chart my profs use to cold call.thetravelinglawyer wrote:This is me so far. That strategy is legit, that's what I have been doing, which I think is why I haven't been called. If that works the whole semester I will be so happy.

Sigh, I hate that Cornell has 5 substantive classes while other schools have 3 substantive + 1 ungraded legal writing.

My hero. Torts can suck an egg, give me a black letter statute any day instead of this squishy common law with an exception for everything.BirdLawExpert wrote:Our torts professor, who literally wrote the book, hates torts and already pretty much thinks this...

My contracts and reg state professors cold call about a 1/3rd of the class every class. You only get asked a question or 2 though so it's not bad.

I like Torts, our visiting professor is a hero and legitimately one of the most entertaining teachers I've ever had.
For cold calls, eh. Been called on a few times in Contracts (small section), once in Civ Pro, and never for Torts (our Torts professor doesn't really bother, and I participate enough in that class anyways). Been told by classmates that my answers are relatively coherent, so figure it's not that big a deal.

if you think cold calling and speaking in front of your peers is the worst thing ever why are you becoming a lawyer
if you haven't noticed these are directly related to the skill set you are expected to utilize daily when practicing and if not daily, certainly in court
