I just don't like really sugary things. Honestly, I'd rather have a good bagel than a doughnut or a cupcake any day, but since good bagels are a rare find in Texas I'll settle for our over-abundance of solid doughnuts.

GOAT breakfast pastry is the Texas kolache, though.

They're a czech pastry that came to Texas along with our massive Czech population. The Czech/OG variant is basically a sweet roll with a fruit spread baked into the center but exposed on the top. The Texas variant (in Czech they're called klobasnek), is a sweet roll baked around a meat-based center. They're basically heaven. I miss them so much. They're really only in central Texas; even Houston, San Antonio and Dallas don't have great kolaches, it's mostly just Austin/Hill Country and the surrounding areas.

One of my ex's parents were born in Poland and made me packzi a few times, and in my mind Czech kolaches barely edge out packzi. Texas kolaches are on the savory end of the spectrum so they don't really directly compare.
