Thanks! I grew up practicing martial arts. First taekwondo, then karate (the Dane Cook of martial arts), then hapkido and some krav maga. Trained in others but not really in-depth. Started instructing when I was in high school, carried it over and taught combatives/self-defense in college and ROTC. Haven't been in the scene since college, but a friend runs a gym and he asked if I wanted to come and coach some guys before I headed off to school.suralin wrote:damn that's awesome. how'd you get into it?BirdLawExpert wrote:Still really mad about my shoulder injury. I was going to start training/coaching at a boxing gym in town and I had to hold off for another month because of it. the gym I go to also does muay thai but I haven't decided if I want to fully commit to that/mma
Muay thai is awesome, my cousin is with the International Justice Mission in Chiang Mai and he just joined a gym and he's loving it, despite never doing martial arts before. I'd definitely recommend mt before diving into mma, just because striking form seems really important in mma.

that's neat as hell—hapkido looks really interesting. haha honestly didn't expect that from you, but I (obviously) am a fan of the nerd + can actually kick your ass aesthetic/juxtaposition.BirdLawExpert wrote:Thanks! and yeah, I meant that I wouldn't do muay thai unless I wanted to fight and vice versa. bjj + lifting (might go back to competing in the future) keep me busy enough for now

Yeah, I was bullied as a kid for being a nerd, so my parents put me in taekwondo to learn to defend myself and it ballooned from there. By the time I actually was playing sports at a high level, my reputation as a nerd was unassailable. Hapkido is really a great thing to pick up as a second or third martial art, considering I think it takes more of an understanding of proper striking technique and the so-called "rhythm" of a fight than other martial arts. How's bjj? The closest I ever got was the ground component of combatives, but I've always been interested in getting into a gym and taking a few classes.suralin wrote: that's neat as hell—hapkido looks really interesting. haha honestly didn't expect that from you, but I (obviously) am a fan of the nerd + can actually kick your ass aesthetic/juxtaposition.

I'm planning to give one month's notice. I'm in a similar situation where I have clients I'm solely responsible for, and we need to transition them to a new account manager over at least that long so they don't get scared and take their business elsewhere.TheKisSquared wrote:I told them... when I took the job, ha .slippin_jimmy wrote:I gave like, 4-4.5 months notice. I am a legal assistant at an IP boutique and have a very large caseload so I feel like I need to give longer than the typical two weeks. I also don't want to let them know too early in case they let me go if they find a replacement sooner than expected.
I would say a month to two months, depending on your relationship with your bosses. Also if you think you'll need to be involved in training/hiring people, give them longer. We've already hired my functional replacement and plan to hire an additional paralegal closer to when I leave. I framed/pitched it to them as a transition period where I would be a resource to the new people. They know I'm not going to do much my last couple of weeks

Luuuckyyyy... I just put down deposits at one school I don't really want to go to and one school that I like but would involve a move that my SO is not thrilled about. That feels pretty meh.rska884 wrote:Like a weight off my shoulders. I couldn't possibly be more excited now.ssitt wrote:Congrats! I'm subbing for a girl my age, and she has a photo of herself and a cute golden retriever on the desk. I feel like I woke up in an alternate timeline where I have a wife and a dog and I teach 9th grade biology.

it's been really legit so far, but I started recently so we'll see how long I stick w it. I do this thing where I pick up new hobbies/interests, become utterly obsessed and then often drop it / burn out after a few monthsBirdLawExpert wrote:Yeah, I was bullied as a kid for being a nerd, so my parents put me in taekwondo to learn to defend myself and it ballooned from there. Re: Senioritis / Quitting-my-job-soon-ioritis (cats are the worst)
I've been talking with friends about where I'm deciding between to deposit. There is an interesting split between lawyers/non-lawyers, but I've also had to explain sports rivalries to multiple people.
"Chervona, you love college football. You would be so happy at X school."
"I love college football largely because I was born a devoted fan of X school's biggest rivals and going there will cause me severe cognitive dissonance if being a fan of X school's sports factors even slightly into this decision...so let's not consider that."
"Oh, how bad could it be? It's just a little rivalry. You could still cheer for them! It'll be fun, right?"

I'm way looking forward to having more spare time in law school than I do now to pursue some new interests. Maybe I'll start lifting again and then try out boxing for kicks and giggles once I get some of my strength back.

I've been negotiating with my parents ways to make it work if I do wind up there. This includes, but is not limited to, only purchasing law school related university clothing/swag and the only football game I can attend is the rivalry game and only if wearing the colors of my birth state's team.BirdLawExpert wrote:This is a major hangup with me and UT. Screw getting law school swag. You should just buy even more stuff from the rivals and wear it all season.ChervonaKatya wrote:I've been negotiating with my parents ways to make it work if I do wind up there. I actually considered this. You get rivalries, rska884. I think this came up because the number of free shirts, etc. I wound up with from undergrad made my parents worry I would be frequently bringing shame to our family, so we agreed I can keep free things, but no purchases unless it said Law on it since there are not law students on the football team.rska884 wrote:

WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN EVENTS, IT BECOMES NECESSARY FOR ONE PEOPLE TO DISSOLVE THE POLITICAL BANDS WHICH HAVE CONNECTED THEM WITH ANOTHER, AND TO ASSUME AMONG THE POWERS OF THE EARTH, THE SEPARATE AND EQUAL STATION TO WHICH THE LAWS OF NATURE AND OF NATURE'S GOD ENTITLE THEM, A DECENT RESPECT TO THE OPINION OF MANKIND REQUIRES THAT THEY SHOULD DECLARE THE CAUSES WHICH IMPEL THEM TO THE SEPARATION.
WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL (AND WHEN I MEET THOMAS JEFFERSON, I'MMA COMPEL HIM TO INCLUDE WOMEN IN THE SEQUEL), THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.--THAT TO SECURE THESE RIGHTS, GOVERNMENTS ARE INSTITUTED AMONG MEN, DERIVING THEIR JUST POWERS FROM THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED, --THAT WHENEVER ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT BECOMES DESTRUCTIVE OF THESE ENDS, IT IS THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO ALTER OR TO ABOLISH IT, AND TO INSTITUTE NEW GOVERNMENT, LAYING ITS FOUNDATION ON SUCH PRINCIPLE AND ORGANIZING ITS POWERS IN SUCH FORM, AS TO THEM SHALL SEEM MOST LIKELY TO EFFECT THEIR SAFETY AND HAPPINESS. PRUDENCE, INDEED, WILL DICTATE THAT GOVERNMENTS LONG ESTABLISHED SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED FOR LIGHT AND TRANSIENT CAUSES; AND ACCORDINGLY ALL EXPERIENCE HATH SHEWN, THAT MANKIND ARE MORE DISPOSED TO SUFFER,WHILE EVILS ARE SUFFERABLE, THAN TO RIGHT THEMSELVES BY ABOLISHING THE FORMS TO WHICH THEY ARE ACCUSTOMED. BUT WHEN A LONG TRAIN OF ABUSES AND USURPATIONS, PURSUING INVARIABLY THE SAME OBJECT EVINCES A DESIGN TO REDUCE THEM UNDER ABSOLUTE DESPOTISM, IT IS THEIR RIGHT, IT IS THEIR DUTY, TO THROW OFF SUCH GOVERNMENT, AND TO PROVIDE NEW GUARDS FOR THEIR FUTURE SECURITY.--SUCH HAS BEEN THE PATIENT SUFFERANCE OF THESE COLONIES; AND SUCH IS NOW THE NECESSITY WHICH CONSTRAINS THEM TO ALTER THEN FORMER SYSTEMS OF GOVERNMENT. THE HISTORY OF THE PRESENT KING OF GREAT BRITAIN IS A HISTORY OF REPEATED INJURIES AND USURPATIONS, ALL HAVING IN DIRECT OBJECT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ABSOLUTE TYRANNY OVER THESE STATES.
