Yea. Not that I don't want to meet a bunch of current students, but I'm pretty sure I'd hear the same things I've been hearing all day, not that the repetition and confirmation isn't appreciated. But I feel like I'd be imposing a bit. Definitely overthinking it, but I'm gonna use it as justification. Gotta be fully awake for our full day tomorrow.madoodle16 wrote: same, I'm not sure if i want to go and mingle or if I just want to sleep haha

Agreed, I'm probably just gonna use the fact that I haven't done the reading for the mock classes as my reason to stay in tonightlymenheimer wrote:Yea. Anyone who went to both UVA and Duke ASWs with some observations (pros and cons) comparing the two?

For those who have attempted to negotiate scholarships, whom did you e-mail? Hoye or the FinAid director?

Email FinAid. I emailed Hoye at first, and he told me to email FinAid directly. They were very quick to respond. Your appeal request will be given to the scholarship committee to review. I'm assuming this is still their weekly Friday meetings, but I could be wrong on that.jg61 wrote:For those who have attempted to negotiate scholarships, whom did you e-mail? I could give you a personal pro/con list, but it's really going to boil down to the individual.larsy91 wrote:Anyone who went to both UVA and Duke ASWs with some observations (pros and cons) comparing the two?
I liked Duke way more than UVA though. I liked that Durham is a bigger city, I think the law school building is better designed and more comfortable to be in, and I just felt generally more at ease here than I did at UVA. Duke as an institution gave off a more academic feel which is important to me. That's the trick to these visits. Outside of the vibe you get when you're at the school, they're pretty fungible.
I know that might not be the most helpful answer out there since not everyone can visit, but it's the best I've got for you.F
As far as cons go, it does feel more like you need a car in Durham than in Cville, the bigger city means maybe more distractions. Those are really the only 2 I've got.

Pretty much the same thing I would say. All the students seem genuine. They were pretty honest if they had things they didn't like about Duke (not that many though) and the things they like about the law school. I spot to a lot of students and faculty about this whole "our faculty really prioritizes teaching" thing that they kept mentioning and from what I heard and speaking to a close friend who is a 1L it definitely seems like that is true.lymenheimer wrote:It was great. Wondering if it is worth trying to negotiate. I received a generous offer but I am tempted to negotiate. But, with the deadline rapidly approaching, I am wondering if it is worth it. PM me if you have insight into this!

Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
Not PM-ing in case it's useful to others, but this weekend I did the financial aid counseling and it was with Dean Hoye and I straight up asked about how often they negotiate and how to go about doing it, and he said that if you reach out with a better offer from a peer school/any new groundbreaking info that strengthens your application, when the committee meets they'll look at what they offered you vs what they offered similar admitted students and determine if they think your offer was in line with what they've offered to other applicants like you, and if it's not, which he said does happen "from time to time", they'll raise it. So that conversation made me feel like they take their own data into account more than the competing offers, but he did mention that it doesn't hurt to just reach out and ask.lolRCscrewyou wrote:Wondering if it is worth trying to negotiate. Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
I don't recall hearing much negativity towards any of it. There are requirements for LRW that are ill-timed (oral arguments during exam prep), but that is just a good faith effort requirement and isn't a graded part. I didn't even hear much disdain for the fact that LRW itself is graded (even from my rather disconnected host). People were actually using it as a positive as far as getting solid feedback from LRW-specific professors.alice1990 wrote:What were some of the things they mentioned they didn't like?BillClinton Jr wrote:Pretty much the same thing I would say. The biggest thing I heard was that 1L parking isn't super close to the law school any other negatives people could think of seemed to be general law school things (stress/getting used to the workload, anxiety of cold calls, etc.)alice1990 wrote:What were some of the things they mentioned they didn't like?BillClinton Jr wrote:Pretty much the same thing I would say. Again, echoing the above poster. Some students said they didn't like how Duke isn't the "normal" college campus that's basically lumped into a college town (bars in walking distance stuff like that). But other students said that doesn't matter because you're a professional student lol. But year parking was mentioned as a pain in the ass. Overall not a lot of negatives at all. OH, pollen. Folks hate the pollen...and graded legal writing that comes with oral arguments (the oral arguments part isn't graded so that's kind of nice).anonymous117 wrote:The biggest thing I heard was that 1L parking isn't super close to the law school any other negatives people could think of seemed to be general law school things (stress/getting used to the workload, anxiety of cold calls, etc.)alice1990 wrote:What were some of the things they mentioned they didn't like?BillClinton Jr wrote:Pretty much the same thing I would say. Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
I didn't catch wind of the parking issue at ASW, but does anyone know if the garage they are building next to the business school will be available for law student parking? Also, does anyone know the closest gym open to (non-athlete) students?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
