Oh yeah? Interesting! The Bay Area basically has an equal chance of being 45 or 75, wet or dry any month of the yearMuiraquita wrote:gamerish wrote:Florida has hot and humid season, and hotter and more humid season. Very distinct.darkchildnana wrote:Florida?capricasixx wrote:
Well, that's because we're the only state in the country that legitimately doesn't have seasons.
To be fair CA has seasons. Windy Season (Late Summer-Fall), Sunny Season (After June Gloom goes away till windy season) , Overcast Season (Springish), and 'Wet' Season (Winterish through Spring-ish). Although this is more LA/OC specific

I love that the article refers to the guy who found the information as a "hacker". Just LOL.

Unfortunately, the more I hear about Rowling's American magic universe, the less I enjoy it. Ilvermorny itself is a terrible name, and now all of the house names are equally poor. Thunderbirds are the only good choice, but they are a Native American legend, why not use their native tongue?capricasixx wrote:Guys. I don't know how to feel about this.

To be fair, "Hogwarts" and "Hufflepuff" would sound pretty terrible too if we hadn't grown up with themBirdLawExpert wrote:Unfortunately, the more I hear about Rowling's American magic universe, the less I enjoy it. Re: Senioritis / Quitting-my-job-soon-ioritis
That's true and fair point, but that fits with the lore and the UK has many, many schools with old stodgy names and traditions. If the American school was going to copy the English school, which seems to be the case given the name Ilvermorny and the house structure, why would they then break with that tradition and name the houses after native mythical creatures rather than simply having them as mascots like Hogwarts does? It's an odd, inconsistent decision (which seems vaguely like it was done simply to promote the creatures we might be seeing in Fantastic Beasts and it's just mildly disappointing given how well thought-out the English side of the magical universe is. JK should have brought in an American author to help make it a truly American magical world rather than a copied and pasted UK version.barley wrote:To be fair, "Hogwarts" and "Hufflepuff" would sound pretty terrible too if we hadn't grown up with themBirdLawExpert wrote:Unfortunately, the more I hear about Rowling's American magic universe, the less I enjoy it. Sorry, I just love Harry Potter a whole bunch (not that the rest of y'all don't) and have spent most of my life imagining an American version of the wizard education system, and it's just kind of disappointing that it seems like it's being treated as an afterthought.

I don't really know how British schools work, but I do know that in the United States we have a pretty long tradition of having animal mascots. I've also never really heard of an American school or university that cares too much about its founder (minus UVA maybe
). So I'm not too bothered by having magical creatures being so prominent, though I do wish Rowling had branched out and invented some of her own rather than completely relying on NA lore. The "humanoid" sounding beast sounds more like it would be analogous to a goblin than an eagle or a snake.
I'm also confused, though, why the American wizarding school even has "Houses" to begin with; is that just a usual boarding school thing I'm not really familiar with, or is Rowling just copy-pasting the idea from Hogwarts?
