I think I just have a thing for seemingly overpowered hypercompetent kid genius protagonist types bc I also don't mind ender who basically exemplifies that trope

I value your opinion and now I am less enthused to read HPMOR.barley wrote:I don't mind book Harry as much because I find his thinking/behavior to be a lot more believable/relatable (he's annoying, but all that is understandable for an11-17 year old boy who has led a terrible life), but I in HPMOR I just keep getting irritated about how this smug elitist little boy keeps outwitting everyone around him. I know he's supposed to be a child genius or whatever, but it's just too over-the-top for me. Though I get that once I get further in the book thinks will presumably start backfiring on him, but till thensuralin wrote:omg re: kingkiller that's actually a great comparison. and I love both kvothe and hpmor!harry
it's hard for me to address the tone argument, bc I sorta identify w them quite a bit. as far as the mary sue critique that both protagonists get (I know nobody brought it up but it is common), the fact that they face p overwhelming odds and that their character flaws often lead them to disaster saves it. in the case of hpmor, eliezer is explicit that not all things harry does or thinks are things eliezer is advocating

Same. I like to see them grow into being somewhat more well balanced and empathetic people but I also enjoy how their brilliance usually leads them to dance on the line between good and evil.suralin wrote:I think I just have a thing for seemingly overpowered hypercompetent kid genius protagonist types bc I also don't mind ender who basically exemplifies that trope

I still think you should read it though, if only because it's fascinating to see more rational rules applied to things like time travel and Transfiguration that don't actually make sense in the original novels. It's really cool!!

hpmor also has a surprisingly thoughtful arc/take on female heroes, both in a general feminist sense and as a meta-take on protagonist diversity in the genre

I think I need to disconnect my internet... I want to get some more work done but I find myself sitting and staring at TLS/FB/random sites
also, never watched any sort of "reality tv" type show I thought was decent or better

I've had to work hard all week but if I play my cards right tomorrow and Monday, I might be able to slack off again next week
