When's it due? I'm sure that you still have plenty of senioritis potential to tap into.cdotson2 wrote:checking in for the first time in here, to say that my last paper in UG is due today.... still have 5 pages till I make the page limit... You can do it!
I've been done since Sunday and I can't figure out what to do with my life. I can't remember the last time I didn't work and go to school full time. Now I just have work and this is a weird feeling

I definitely had more problems stifling my laughter every 30 seconds than I did hiding tears (though obv not for those scenes).SlithyTove wrote:

Well, Rowling's work still stands on its own as a masterpiece. But I definitely agree that LW's additions and clarifications to the lore are fantastic.Bearlyalive wrote:SlithyTove wrote: Omfg it's everything Harry Potter should have been.
I agree. One cannot stand without the other. But there's so much depth here and such high quality characterization that in hindsight, HP seems a bit simplistic and shallow. I'm trying not to judge too harshly since LW had so much more to draw from than Rowling did when she first created the series and her creation of this world out of whole cloth was absolutely incredible. But I think I'm going to have a hard time thinking about this universe without this new information.

Most of my outbursts are either laughter or me shouting "YES!" accidentally aloud. But there have been tears and I bet there'll be more.Bearlyalive wrote:I definitely had more problems stifling my laughter every 30 seconds than I did hiding tears (though obv not for those scenes).SlithyTove wrote:

So I don't think I'm as far as SlithyTove but I'm having trouble reading it because Harry just annoys me so much. He's so obnoxious and pretentious.
Does he get any better??

Too late. But I don't care. I've started thinking of it as the 'real' story while the original books were just the version that was safe to release to the public.suralin wrote:yeah I've never laughed and cried so much at a story

Re: Senioritis / Quitting-my-job-soon-ioritis (degenerate city)
There were a few chapters in the early 30's when I hated him so much I wanted to stop reading. He's still completely pretentious (he reminds me a lot of Kvothe from Name of the Wind in that way) but he's found some humility and it doesn't bother me at all anymore. At least for now.barley wrote:So I don't think I'm as far as SlithyTove but I'm having trouble reading it because Harry just annoys me so much. I suppose my staunch "utilitarianism is BS" position may make me biased towards Rowling. I don't know if anything in HPMOR gets me like the Kings Cross station chapter with Dumbledore in Deathly Hallows. I definitely think LW has the edge for humor, plot complexity (and pulling it off), and a few other things, but it never ruined the original for me. They're both great

omg re: kingkiller that's actually a great comparison. and I love both kvothe and hpmor!harry
it's hard for me to address the tone argument, bc I sorta identify w them quite a bit. as far as the mary sue critique that both protagonists get (I know nobody brought it up but it is common), the fact that they face p overwhelming odds and that their character flaws often lead them to disaster saves it. in the case of hpmor, eliezer is explicit that not all things harry does or thinks are things eliezer is advocating

Oookay I'll stick with it and hopefully will find him more bearable soon! I absolutely love how the story fleshes out the HP universe in such a well thought out way so it'll be great when Harry stops getting in the way of me enjoying that part of the story!!!!!!Bearlyalive wrote:I dunno if this should count as a spoiler, since it's mostly answering your question, but w/e:barley wrote:So I don't think I'm as far as SlithyTove but I'm having trouble reading it because Harry just annoys me so much. I don't mind book Harry as much because I find his thinking/behavior to be a lot more believable/relatable (he's annoying, but all that is understandable for an11-17 year old boy who has led a terrible life), but I in HPMOR I just keep getting irritated about how this smug elitist little boy keeps outwitting everyone around him. I know he's supposed to be a child genius or whatever, but it's just too over-the-top for me. Though I get that once I get further in the book thinks will presumably start backfiring on him, but till thensuralin wrote:omg re: kingkiller that's actually a great comparison. and I love both kvothe and hpmor!harry
