No need and no way to prepare, really. If you must, this would be what I recommend: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/031415016 ... tshell+lawmagneticfields wrote:Anyone doing anything special to prepare for the uhm, ehm, ehem... academics?

I'm thinking about buying a laptop soon. I'm wondering - do y'all think a 15 inch screen is too big? I plan on taking it to class each day for notes.

Re: Columbia Law Class of 2019
I think that's personal preference. I love a 13 inch screen, but I have friends (and a brother) who swear they can't use less than 15 inches. I don't think it's too big to carry around or take to class though.DC006 wrote:I'm thinking about buying a laptop soon. I'm wondering - do y'all think a 15 inch screen is too big? Re: Columbia Law Class of 2019
What'd everyone do for housing?
I've been living in NY for a few years now, but think that it'd be easier to just have Columbia as my landlord, given the horrible experiences that I've had with slum lords in the past.
I put Lionsgate and a few of the random 115th street buildings as my top preferences. Just haven't heard much chatter here about it, and wanted to collect peoples' thoughts.

UAH, fingers crossed for a studio. We'll see how the lottery treats me.

Same here - it seems like Columbia housing is way less of a headache than any of the other options.Bearlyalive wrote:UAH, fingers crossed for a studio. We'll see how the lottery treats me.

Yup, it's great. It's as stress-free as I could possible hope. Went to IKEA last weekend to scope out furniture, and I just made lists of items that I would get for a studio versus those I would get for a two-bedroom.jadenkorr wrote:Same here - it seems like Columbia housing is way less of a headache than any of the other options.Bearlyalive wrote:UAH, fingers crossed for a studio. UAH is different than the law-school specific housing, right? Why'd you go that route? I didn't see much information about it.Bearlyalive wrote:UAH, fingers crossed for a studio. We'll see how the lottery treats me.

It tends to be cheaper and more spacious than law housing, albeit a little bit further from the law buildings (think a 5-15 minute walk instead of around the corner). Your roommates can be graduate students in other schools, but you won't be sharing with an undergrad.frasier wrote:UAH is different than the law-school specific housing, right? Yeah... that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Is it the same application? Sorry, I guess I missed the memo about this option.Bearlyalive wrote:It tends to be cheaper and more spacious than law housing, albeit a little bit further from the law buildings (think a 5-15 minute walk instead of around the corner). Yes, it is. Just check no for law school housing and then the price options change. You can probably just email Juliana Utley too and say you're open to either, but would prefer UAH over law only.frasier wrote:Yeah... that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Is it the same application? And I'm doing UAH apartment share. Asked for 1L roommate, but I'm going in random and hoping for the best.

Do you have a link handy for a webpage that has more information? Specifically, a map of the range of locations would be great.anonymous117 wrote:

I've been living in Harlem for the past two years.. and I'm read to move out. Just don't want to end up at 127th and Broadway and have to deal with all of that jazz.

For location:
http://facilities.columbia.edu/housing/overview
You probably used this site when you were submitting your housing app; the only difference is requesting law housing on the form. You can also opt out of the Riverdale site.
The website:Most UAH units are located in the Morningside Heights and Manhattan Valley Neighborhoods, between 108th Street and 125thStreet. University housing is also located in Riverdale, the Bronx, 20 minutes from campus by shuttle bus.

Wait law housing is less spacious, but more expensive? Why's that? Is it the distance?Bearlyalive wrote:It tends to be cheaper and more spacious than law housing, albeit a little bit further from the law buildings (think a 5-15 minute walk instead of around the corner). Primarily, yes. Some of the law buildings also have more modern amenities, and even a doorman to receive packages. Can't recall which buildings off the top of my head though.Anon13 wrote:Wait law housing is less spacious, but more expensive? Why's that? Other law schools seem to have some sort of roommate survey...do we have anything like that if we're going through Columbia housing? besides the few questions at the bottom of the app that ask how often do you clean etc. I'd really prefer to room with a fellow 1L

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Other people have suggested emailing the housing office with more intangible preferences. That's what I did, so here's hoping it works!minionsunite wrote:Other law schools seem to have some sort of roommate survey...do we have anything like that if we're going through Columbia housing? besides the few questions at the bottom of the app that ask how often do you clean etc. I'd really prefer to room with a fellow 1L

Gotcha, that's what I'll do then. Thanks for your help! I wish they would just have a section on the app itself where you can type in other preferences but oh wellsjadenkorr wrote:Other people have suggested emailing the housing office with more intangible preferences. Re: Columbia Law Class of 2019
What kind of additional preferences did people make for housing? I want to request a 1L as a roommate, but would like to know if there's anything else that might be useful/worth mentioning.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
