No downsides to only adding the alias to my main gmail account (for the send-as), right?

I did my main one first and now am getting an error when trying to add the alias (which is the one I'd rather have...). Do you think it's not possible to do both?

Shouldn't be a problem to do both...I only added the alias though and tested everything (sending an email as the alias and replying back to it) and it all worked perfectly including the forwarding.

I would just add the alias if that's what you plan on using anyway.

I got it to work for where I'm sending from, but emails sent to the alias aren't forwarding... This is so frustrating.

After you add the email address you want them forwarded to (in lionmail), and after you click the link that it sends to your main inbox to confirm the forwarding, you have to go back into lionmail and select the account under forwarding. It'll say like "forward to mainemail@gmail.com" and then another box with what you want it to do with lionmail's copy.

It also won't forward if you're sending the test email from the account that the emails should be forwarding to.

Also in case this is helpful for anyone else, I realize what my initial mistake was. When you are sending emails in gmail you can include or not include the "." i.e. you can send an email to john.smith@gmail.com or johnsmith@gmail.com and it goes to the same address. However, you have to make sure to include the "." in your columbia address when setting up your send as. Hope that helps someone!

i'm starting to wonder if i did something wrong, but i literally just logged into my lionmail email through google. my UG did it this way too so i automatically figured i would try it this way for columbia too. i just clicked my picture at the top of my gmail-->add account-->add account and then typed in my UNI@columbia.edu and it took me to the lionmail page where i logged in. and now every time i'm on my personal gmail i can toggle back and forth between my personal / lionmail the usual way as if it were just two gmail accounts

does anyone know if there's a reason doing it this way is a bad idea? if not, it could be a good way for some of you who are having trouble!

no this is literally all lionmail links you to iirc. after activating lionmail through the site it also showed up in my accounts dropdown as usual
