wow congrats! do you mind sharing details and what leverage you used?
My initial offer was very low so doubling it didn't take a whole lot but I am still happy they were willing to go up! I mentioned by name the other schools I am considering and that they offered more than half tuition but didn't give full numbers because I was expecting another round of negotiation. I plan on trying to get one of the other schools to up their offer before going back to Georgetown. I also told them that I want PI work which is demonstrated by my current job and that I want to minimize debt.
That being said, how risky is it to email them back and give them an exact number that would cause me to enroll immediately? I am concerned that if they believe it is too high that they will write me off and not increase it.

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
From what I've read if you're willing to throw out a number that you will immediately commit for than that number should be pretty close to unreasonably high-- I also can't recall reading stories of anyone being any worse off for asking for a high amount but I'm not sure. Any one else have insight on being written off after asking for too much? It's a strategy I'm considering as well if I'm lucky enough to get to a second round of negotiation.janderson821 wrote:rychellemarie wrote:janderson821 wrote:I got an email back today about negotiation and my scholarship was doubled! I worry that the round of scholarship holds that went out this week were because they felt like they couldn't give the number it would take for them to attend. All of the people that got that email seem to have pretty high stats. I could just be way off base though.rychellemarie wrote:From what I've read if you're willing to throw out a number that you will immediately commit for than that number should be pretty close to unreasonably high-- I also can't recall reading stories of anyone being any worse off for asking for a high amount but I'm not sure. I feel like it had more to do with GULC believing that no amount of money would make those applicants seriously consider attending. A lot of the people that posted had Rubys, Vanderbilts, and/or a HYS acceptance.janderson821 wrote:I worry that the round of scholarship holds that went out this week were because they felt like they couldn't give the number it would take for them to attend. Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
Correct. Let's say you get $10k merit aid but $15k need based aid for your first year. You will receive $15k. They keep your awards though, so if the next year your need based aid were to dip to say $9k, you would still get the full $10k merit award. But you wouldn't receive $25k.gazorpazorp wrote:As far as need based aid goes, I've seen a few people mention that it doesn't "stack" with merit based scholarships. So you would just get the higher of the two? Is that how it works? I'm curious because at other schools (e.g. Michigan) it does stack -- so if it doesn't at GULC, they're gonna have to offer a very hefty merit scholarship in order to compete with the combined merit/need-based amount from Mich.

Sorry if this has been answered, but this thread has me a bit lost. Were we required to let them know we were interested in merit aid in order to be considered for it?

The poll results leave that impression. You have nothing to lose by requesting merit aid. Just shoot GULC a short email.lemoknope602 wrote:Sorry if this has been answered, but this thread has me a bit lost. Got a response that they aren't going to up my offer...I still don't have scholarship info from all my schools so I didn't include the other offers, does anyone know if it's worth coming at them again when I have better offers? Or is it a one-shot deal with GULC?

In fact it may be better to write 'm now and then (assuming you won't be satisfied after their next reply) again if you get another offer later

I had the same question so I emailed them to confirm. I assume it is only aid in the package shown but I'll let you know what I hear.JuliusCaesar wrote:So I just got an email for my Financial aid awards but have not received a notification of Merit award. They are two separate things are Georgetown and you get the greater of the two values from my understanding, but does me getting the notification of financial aid award but no merit award yet mean I won't be offered a merit award?

It will show an Academic scholarship and/or a Dean's Tuition Grant.

Just got my need offer. So the dean's tuition grant, presuming your financial circumstances don't change, will be renewed every year? So you can multiply it by 3 and that's your total award? Mine is way larger than I thought so I'm having a hard time accepting/believing this is what they're giving me.

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
Aloha, checking in. I was another individual that was sent the feeler email but then placed on the alternate list. I emailed them back on Friday less than an hour after receiving the email with my current offers and explaining my situation in better detail. I also sent them an email today because I am in DC for spring break and signed up to visit a class by Professor Cole. I told them that I would stop by their office tomorrow.
Would love to hear the tactics/strategies people are using to get off the alternate list or people's plans to do so (you can feel free to PM me). I have a full ride at WUSTL, 120k at GW, a quarter at UVA, and half at Duke.... Georgetown is my number one because my partner is attending med school there... very lost and disappointed about what to do.

Wondering the same thing in reference to auto renewing if circumstances remain the same. Also was surprised at the size of the need based offer.NotoriousRBGJr. wrote:Just got my need offer. On their site: "Dean's Tuition Grants are awarded with the understanding that there is a moral obligation for the student to repay the funds received. By accepting the grant award, the student accepts his/her moral responsibility to contribute to Georgetown Law when financially able to do so."
Umm, so, they expect us to pay this money back? Honestly GULC, with your need and/or merit aid (but not both) and overall confusing system of awarding, it's leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.

Moral obligations are not binding. They're just asking you donate when you're not a starving law student anymore.lolRCscrewyou wrote:On their site: "Dean's Tuition Grants are awarded with the understanding that there is a moral obligation for the student to repay the funds received. So are these dean tuition grants considered our scholarship if we received the feeler email? I was also just awarded one
