That's my mom and I was fine. (though I got a lot more involved in college and had gone to shabbat often enough to speak intelligently about it.) You are sort of exactly who birthright wants because they can make you into a better jew

Yup! Winter and I think they even have one weirdly timed in the spring (maybe for spring break?). Depends on the company you go with!

Haha I don't think it's about weeding out other people, it's just establishing the criteria for being a "member". As I understand it, every religion has a similar litmus test.

Obviously people are welcome to consider themselves whatever they want, and at least in Judaism, I'm certain they'll find a community inclusive of them no matter what "test" they pass. Although, there are all sorts of complicated issues that come up in Israel's legal system due to different thresholds for conversion, for instance.

Judaism (and Islam, in the limited amount I've studied it) as a legal system is fascinating.

I'm sorry because that sounds really hard to be around. I would say yes to the borderline racist thing, and even if it's not 'racist' it's definitely tone-deaf (for example the struggles of being a jew in the catholic church, when she was not a jew in the catholic church).

This is a weird thing about Judaism vs./and the Jewish people, though. I don't think she's a Jew if she doesn't practice Judaism.

edit: and my standards of what constitutes 'practice' are super super low.

the thing is at the end of the day she is part of catholic western European community im assuming so she is just that but with a different background. If she went to a Jewish community it would appear foreign to her. many people like to embrace their roots...even when their roots are different from them and even they are not fully comfortable or at home with them. My father for example is haitian, speaks french and creole. I never truly felt to at home at extended family reunions because if felt like the black sheep even though no one ever treated me that way. at the end of the day culturally i am not Haitian/Haitian-American...im just millennial generic american. just like she is not Jewish-western catholic (or polish?) she just also happens to be Jewish. Embracing your ethnicity is different than embracing the community of your ethnicity. I would always defend my ethnic background even if i dont necessarily live the typical culture of my background.

I don't think I would say no... I can kinda get why she would not think so and why she does it, but imo it does seem a bit obsessive. It can def be a drastic change especially if she is really big on her religion but at some point she's gotta understand that she is going overboard

I appreciate the thoughts, y'all. You're probably right that in some way the humor is just her processing her shift in identity, but the tone deaf (this feels a bit more accurate than racist) nature of her actions is concerning. Hopefully this is just a bad reflex response to the information and her behavior normalizes as she has time to process.
