ohthatjenn, did you really go from an interview request to acceptance on the same day? That's what I was gathering from your posts yesterday. If so, what a day! Congrats!

This is probably a stupid question, but after a bit of googling/searching I'm stumped. Does anybody know if when the Pavilion apartments say they are "sold out" of 1 bedrooms, that means that they're sold out 'til next year? http://pavilionatnorthgrounds.com/floor ... -bathroom/
I can call and ask in the morning, but I'm impatient. Thanks!

Thank you! Haha no the interview request was the day before. I was just re-reading the email right before my interview.. and thought, "oh my gosh what if this is not an interview?!" LOLOtterLaw wrote:Welcome you guys!ohthatjenn wrote:+1thebrownnote wrote:Checking in. Definitely attending come fall.

I'm pretty sure it means they're sold out until August 2017. They're booking now for August 2016-July 2017.

Okay, thank you. Jesus, the last time I moved somewhere (denver), I found the exact apartment I wanted and moved in within a week. I was not expecting people to be locking in apartments 4 months in advance in Charlottesville.hl1917 wrote:thebrownnote wrote:This is probably a stupid question, but after a bit of googling/searching I'm stumped. Happy to help! I don't blame you - where I'm from you can't really even get an apartment more than 1 month in advance. I think it is because the school is on a school-year calendar so the apartments around adjust. Just a tip, though, if you really want to live at the Pavilion in a 1 bedroom, ask them to let you know if someone needs to release a 1 bedroom. If someone who already signed their contracts ends up at a different school, that person will be desperate to find someone to release!thebrownnote wrote:Okay, thank you. Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
Hey guys, I need some reassuring! I'm 90% sure I'm going to UVA, but I haven't paid my deposit because of the nagging fear that it isn't worth it without a scholarship. This is the only T14 school where I have been accepted, and my other offers are ok scholarships at T30 schools and full rides at lower-level schools. I am not rich by any means, but I look at the employment/salary stats and think that I should have no problem paying off the massive debt. But I'm still nervous even though I know that 60% of the incoming class has no scholarship.
Can some of you non-scholarship recipients tell me your rationale for accepting??

Do you want to go into big law? Then you have a very good chance of getting a job making good money that will allow you pay off your debt quickly if you are thrifty. And unlike at a T30 school, you won't have to kick, scratch, and claw your way into the top 10% of your class to guarantee that.autumnleaves wrote:Hey guys, I need some reassuring! Do you want to go into public interest work or even rural Virginia private work? Then UVA has a great LRAP program, almost definitely better than what you will find at a T30 school. http://www.law.virginia.edu/html/public ... orgive.htm
One of those two things hopefully applies for you!

Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
Usually i wouldn't advocate a school at sticker, but if your next best option is a T30 with only OK money, I really think your best bet is UVA. Really weird that you didn't get anything better than that but got into UVA, did you underapply maybe? UVA with no money should equate to really good money at places like UT or UCLA.thebrownnote wrote:Do you want to go into big law? Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
HELP! After the open house, I was pretty much set on UVA Law. My choice was between UVA & Michigan, both at sticker.
Then, I received a need-based scholarship from Michigan for 60k+ (total for all three years). UVA has made it clear they are not negotiating with me which I thought was ok since both Michigan and UVA are ranked #8. I visited Ann Arbor last week, and absolutely loved it and I'm 90% sure I'll attend. However, I'm having second thoughts about not attending UVA. I'm from Virginia (and actually went to UVA for undergrad) so I'm a little nervous about leaving this area to go freeze to death in Ann Arbor. Plus, I feel like UVA's employment stats are slightly better than Michigan's. But what do you guys think, am I making the right decision by taking the money and running?
Also, I don't really have a strong preference for which market I'd like to work in post graduation. I just want a (biglaw) job.
PLEASE HELP. Any advice/tips anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!

A people in the know seem to think UM is overranked due to its past glory, and recent employment stats seem to back that up. Also, it doesnt really have a strong legal market to feed to, so you're always going to be competing on others schools' home turf. Having said that, 60k os not a small amount of money.

Great points Nagster. Networking opportunities would be much more limited in Ann Arbor. Charlottesville is a great location to access several nearby legal markets.Nagster5 wrote:A people in the know seem to think UM is overranked due to its past glory, and recent employment stats seem to back that up. If I were you I'd probably pick michigan. I have specific reasons for wanting to go to uva, so it'd take more money than that for me to leave. But in your case, you visited and liked michigan, and you went to uva for undergrad, so that still leaves plenty of networking potential in DC/VA. And 60k is 2+ years less of debt repayment. Or as Oprah would put it: A NEW CAR!!!ert2sk wrote:Great points Nagster. Networking opportunities would be much more limited in Ann Arbor. I don't really think minute differences in perceived accuracy of rankings should factor in here.

Has anyone used the Alumni Connection Form in the admitted students portal yet? I'm tempted, but I just wanted to check if anyone had a good or bad experience with it.

I did and received an email from an alum you graduated like 15+ years ago and was working in the middle of nowhere. Apparently not many UVA law alum with the same UG as methebrownnote wrote:Has anyone used the Alumni Connection Form in the admitted students portal yet? I had an awesome experience with it. They put me in touch with someone who has taken more or less the exact path I want to and she was really nice. I definitely recommend it. Also, it's just really helpful to get perspectives from alumni too as they have been out in the world imothebrownnote wrote:Has anyone used the Alumni Connection Form in the admitted students portal yet? I did! It wasn't necessarily a game changer, but I found it helpful and interesting. They matched me surprisingly well with an alum, but be sure to give them enough details to do that. We talked about his career path, experience leaving major city to Charlottesville, my concerns, etc.thebrownnote wrote:Has anyone used the Alumni Connection Form in the admitted students portal yet? My impression of visiting family in Cville over the years is that it wouldn't be the best place to live without a car, but it's doable. The amtrak to DC is pretty easy, and you could always rent a car for a day/weekend if you want to go hiking or something. And now there's Uber, so you can easily use that if you're out drinking or need to get to the airport.RedWhite&Blonde wrote:Is it worth bringing a car?
If you have a car already, I'd bring it, since it'll make groceries, furniture, daytrips etc. that much easier. But I wouldn't run out and buy one right now.
I bet a current student can provide more info though.

In my small group discussion at ASW almost exactly half of the students said they had cars when someone asked FWIW. It seems very doable to not have a car

So I know the consensus has been there's no more money, but maybe after deposit day, some will free up.
I emailed them to be like am I going to get any? can someone just let me know? pretty please? And they were like sure thing-- you won't be
So for anyone who wants to reduce the pool of unknowns, that's an option that may be available to you..
