I'm hard-pressed to call HPMOR "fanfiction". Take the authors advice, read the first 10 chapters (they're fairly short). It gets even better after that, but if you don't like it by then, you won't be so invested that you can't stop there.

yeah hpmor is hardly fanfic. it's better

it does def get preachy and SV-style enlightenment-y at times but it's well worth it for the plot complexity and general character & theme richness

Probably a good call, I think I nearly tanked a quarter's worth of grades because I opened a chapter to show it to a friend and then ended up rereading the whole thing right before finals.
