FYI fairly large viewbooks are probably coming your way, so don't get too excited when you see GULC mail during scholly season - unless you want to get excited about the viewbook, obvi.

The "Imagine" view book? I got my hopes up when I saw it, but I have to say it is very pretty.slippin_jimmy wrote:FYI fairly large viewbooks are probably coming your way, so don't get too excited when you see GULC mail during scholly season - unless you want to get excited about the viewbook, obvi.

Sorry to quote myself and double post on this topic, but could someone PM me to clarify how I should be handling this. I'd love to not have to make the $1k deposit and potentially lose it.darlenealderson wrote:Ok, so if I submit the scholarship form saying yes, and saying that I will submit form 2, but don't submit it until May 1...and then instead choose another institution once that info comes in...what happens? Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
Just got a response from my inquiry to the hotline email (emphasis mine):
Alright soo.... there's no way they would require a deposit by April 1st, then, yeah? (Also yes, I submitted my need-based form already)Thank you for your email and your inquiry regarding merit-based funding from Georgetown. We are aware that financing a law school education can often appear challenging. The scholarship process is our effort to consider holistically – just as we did when we reviewed your application for admission – all requests for scholarship assistance. Please keep in mind that scholarships awarded through this process are just one part of what should be an overall approach to financing your Georgetown education.
The Committee has made some initial scholarship awards and plans to continue to make additional awards on a rolling basis. Your request has been added to your file. Alison Spada, Director of Admissions, will be coordinating the scholarship process. If you have any questions at all about scholarships or anything else, please contact her via hotline@law.georgetown.edu.

What is the exact wording of the offer? I would also look over the link below.darlenealderson wrote:Sorry to quote myself and double post on this topic, but could someone PM me to clarify how I should be handling this. This makes it sound like their April 1 deadline is kosher. Which, like, gross.Scholarships may represent an important opportunity for law
schools to recruit applicants that advance their institutional goals,
while allowing students to reduce the overall cost of attending
law school.
Member law schools should:
• develop fair, coherent, and consistent policies in their scholarship awarding process and (if applicable) scholarship revision or reconsideration requests;
• provide applicants and admitted students with the general guidelines used in scholarship awarding;
• request commitments of any kind from admitted students to accept an offer of institutional aid no earlier than April 1, except under binding early decision plans or for academic terms beginning in the spring or summer; and
• state clearly the requirements and policies for scholarship retention (e.g., academic or service requirements, or any consequences if the student transfers to another law school)

It says: To accept the scholarship, please return the attached Intent to Enroll form by 01-Apr-2016. Thank you for understanding that, with the exception of extraordinary circumstances, we are unable to grant extensions to this response deadline.TheKisSquared wrote: What is the exact wording of the offer? The intent to enroll form says either: I am pleased to accept Georgetown Law’s scholarship award and will be enrolling. or I do not plan to enroll at Georgetown Law and hereby decline my acceptance and scholarship award.
Under the I plan to enroll option, there are 2 main options for how to proceed: pay the deposit by May 2, or Choose Georgetown Law’s Optional Tuition Deposit Waiver Option.
That form says:
However it also says at the bottom Please complete and return this signed commitment form via fax or e-mail by May 2, 2016.I am choosing Georgetown Law’s Optional Tuition Deposit Waiver Option in lieu of submitting my tuition deposit to secure my seat in the incoming class. I understand that this option was designed as a service to me and in choosing this option and signing this form, I am committing to enroll at the Law Center for Fall 2016 and will withdraw from all waitlists, withdraw any pending applications to and decline any offers of admission from all other law schools and will not initiate any new applications. I further understand that I am under no obligation to choose this option and, having done so, understand that Georgetown Law may provide my name to other law schools.
Based on all of that, my thought would be that if I submit the intent to enroll and check the option for the deposit waiver, I should still be okay? Meaning that until I sign a document saying I'm withdrawing my applications...I don't have to? Meaning between April 1 and May 2 I can continue not only to negotiate with Georgetown, but I can wait and see what other offers come my way? I guess the real question is, how binding is the intent to enroll? And what repercussions will I face if I go back on that? I really don't want to start out my legal career doing anything less than ethical, but, at the same time, I am not 100% ready to commit given that I'm waiting on two other schools to give me financial aid offers.

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
Okay is *sounds* like you don't need to deposit until you need to deposit (May) but you do need to return the form by April 1 (unless it says somewhere that you can't submit the form without either depositing or waiving, in which case yes, you need to deposit). I'm not sure whether GULC has the ability to get mad at you if you submit the form, don't deposit, and then withdraw before depositing.darlenealderson wrote:It says: To accept the scholarship, please return the attached Intent to Enroll form by 01-Apr-2016. However, if you get a new scholly offer before withdrawing and depositing I'm pretty sure they can't get mad at you, because you're withdrawing based on new information. I'm not an expert though, and I'd love to hear others' take.

Honestly I would probably just reach out to them and say "hey, I plan on submitting the intent to enroll form to secure my scholly offer, am I required to submit the deposit with it at the same time or may I wait until closer to the deadline."

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
I know the deposit isn't required until May 2, so that's not the issue. My issue is whether signing an intent to enroll--and saying that I will be depositing by May 2--is binding me to that. I may have to call, but if anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it.TheKisSquared wrote:Honestly I would probably just reach out to them and say "hey, I plan on submitting the intent to enroll form to secure my scholly offer, am I required to submit the deposit with it at the same time or may I wait until closer to the deadline."

Yeah. And I think that's right too, I've been looking at old forums to see what others have said and that seems to be the consensus--I think I'm just paranoid (cheap psychological tricks clearly work too well on meWillie Beamen wrote:I think this is what you're talking about?Hand wrote:Not binding. Same here. Has anyone received anything since Monday? Wondering if I should expect to hear any day now or if it's going to be awhile until hearing anything further...Egzon wrote:Feeler email but still nothing...

I'm considering emailing them asking if they have an update due to impending ASWs and decision deadlines. It is definitely no longer "early march"nyc15 wrote:Same here. Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
I think everyone who asked, or got the feeler, will hear something (for better or worse) by the end of April. The confirmation e-mail I got after expressing interest said they'll be sending them out this March and April. That timeline probably includes the rounds of negotiations if I had to guess. If I was on a tight deadline, I would give them a call or write with details about your situation.

I really hope that those of us who haven't heard Scholly info yet don't have this same April 1st deadline. That'd suck to only have about a week to decide

Hi all,
Just wanted to ask if anyone who received a large scholarship (90k+) also received need-based aid? I haven't received my need based award info yet, but I'm pretty poor, so I feel like I should get a good amount if they don't reject me due to the size of my scholarship =/
Thanks!

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2019
If I remember from open house, their max grant for need-based aid is like $35k/year, and need and merit based aid don't stack. You only receive whichever is higher. So if you've already gotten a $30k+/year merit scholarship, chances are need-based won't beat it.180kickflip wrote:Hi all,

Do you need to submit anything other than the Need Access Form and the Fafsa for need-based aid? Has anyone heard anything back for need-based aid?

You also need to fill out the Yellow Application from the financial aid webpage.Paulaaxox wrote:Do you need to submit anything other than the Need Access Form and the Fafsa for need-based aid? Has anyone heard anything back for need-based aid?

You need to also fill out the full Yellow Application. I submitted my fafsa 2/3, need access 2/5 and my yellow app 3/7. Georgetown's website says a tentative award should be issued 3 weeks after all required forms are in. I haven't heard anything yet.

Sent an initial attempt at negotiating yesterday, got the response about some initial offers having gone out (copied above) today. I made sure to mention a hefty offer from another T14, which might have expedited their response slightly (if there are other folks who've sent inquiries that haven't been acknowledged yet).

Sorry can you clarify if you already received your $ offer from Gtown and that you're negotiating that offer, or whether you're simply requesting merit aid based on aid from another T14 since you didn't receive a feeler email?berek wrote:Sent an initial attempt at negotiating yesterday, got the response about some initial offers having gone out (copied above) today.
