Re: Abandon A1L Hope, Ye Who Enter Here (1L thread)
How does everyone feel about their classes thus far?
I am liking Contracts more and more, although I find it the most difficult. I also really enjoy Civ Pro, and Property is pretty interesting as well. I can't get excited about Torts for some reason- anyone else feel the same way?
We've gotten two graded memos back so far in LRW. I'm happier with my second memo grade- slight improvement from my first one. I do appreciate that I have a chance to work on my writing, and know I probably wouldn't try so hard if the class weren't graded. But it's just crazy that I already have two grades back when I feel like I'm just barely getting the swing of things in law school.

no but seriously torts questions look at the facts of a case in ways that procedural questions dont (like, they actually focus on the facts, which are almost always interesting) and i find questions about liability more interesting than questions about "where is my jurisdiction/proper venue/do i have due process/diversity/etc"
i guess im more interested in the actions of people interacting with other people/entities than the action of courts trying to work through how much power courts/feds/states have/should have
like, a car accident leading to the heart attack of someone watching in a mcdonald's and the negligent party steps out of his car and then the car explodes bc faulty design and causes severe injury to that person and surprise! there's 7 people in a 5 seater oh no what do we do is just so much more interesting than a judge going "well bc the manufacturer of the engine's principal place of business in the state which this nutty shit happened and this particular engine made up about 45% of their revenue (lol there is no shot a business lets this happen but w/e), we can exert general jurisdiction over them so get this motion to dismiss out of here"

Civ Pro is my favorite class so far. I really like my professor who, while tough, is also entertaining and keeps you engaged in the material. Reg State is by far my least favorite class. I don't have torts, crim law or property this semester.

I think Civ Pro is my favorite class. I'm not super excited about Torts either, but I have a great Torts professor, so that helps. Crim is interesting but sometimes feels frustratingly basic/slow in comparison to the other classes.

Torts is just hilarious stories to me. I don't feel any kind of way about the class, and I don't brief the cases. But I do the readings and remember the stories, which means remembering the material facts plus some funny facts.
Overall I'd say torts is the easiest.
Probably: Contracts > Torts > Civ Pro > Con > LRW...imo

Anyone else get to choose an elective for next semester? Our registration is next week and I'm trying to find the balance between something I'm interested in and something that isn't going to be overwhelming.

Yep. We get to choose two electives. Haven't given it much thought but some of my section mates are seriously stressing over it. What are you guys thinking of taking?Smallville wrote:yeah, we just got the email yesterday with our choicesThe Abyss wrote:Anyone else get to choose an elective for next semester? Bringing this back to life.
I literally love every single one of my classes. My Leg Reg casebook is my favorite textbook maybe ever, my Contracts professor is hilarious and makes concepts very memorable, everything about my Torts class is amazing, my Civ Pro professor is a phenomenal teacher. LRW might be my favorite, even though my legal writing skills are average at best.
Is everyone else looking at jobs? I'm so stressed about this job search situation, and I literally have done absolutely nothing to look into it out of sheer terror that I'll find myself unemployable.

But I also really, really love law school. I've probably been verging on more stress than is healthy, but I'm so happy to be where I am.

You can add me to the list of people who love law school! I am stressing a bit about jobs but the OPIA advisor I met with said I should come out of the law school public interest job fair with an offer from some place so that was relieving.schocolate wrote:sfoglia wrote:Is everyone else looking at jobs? Ya'll are at HLS, stop stressing over jobs haha.
I'm still trying to decide whether I want to stay in NYC or go down to D.C. for my first summer. I'm not all to concerned about finding something to do, but there are definitely a few agencies and offices that I would love to work with. Fingers are crossed. But right now my attention is definitely focused on finishing this memo that I'm definitely not procrastinating on by browsing TLS, no ma'am/sir.

haha for real, Im between like 3 different places right now and the amount of preference for each is like constantly sliding to the opposite of how I started out... the struggle is real, not looking forward to preparing a million cover letters and that to send outBearlyalive wrote:Ya'll are at HLS, stop stressing over jobs haha.

i generally enjoy law school but the culture of stress and panic and constant concern with image/professionalism is grating.
